My Volitany and Spotty Lions

Cool thread, Wilson!

Enjoyed reading it.

Will try to take some videos of the feeding.

Not easy to do that alone as the lions really attack the live prey at lightning speeds.

Right now, I have feeding them live glass shrimps to keep their predatory instincts and they loved it!

Can let us know if you are able to wean them on frozen food? And if so, can share how you did it?

Sir, I do not train my lions with frozen food as I enjoy watching them ambushing their preys.

However, when I first started, I did tried with frozen glass shrimps (I am keeping a tank of live glass shrimps and stored the dead ones in the freezer).

But, only my spotty lion took the frozen dead ones. The volitan simply refused to eat dead ones.

Maybe because I fed them once a day and they started to get picky...

I used a long (45cm) metal clipper to pick the dead prawn (thawed of course) by its tail and started to wave it in front of the lion to simulate the prawn action. The lion will just execute its invincible 'suction' gongfu to bring the whole prawn into its belly...

bro. nice tank and fish :welldone:

how u manage to maint. ur tank so clean?

i once keep lionfish before. :ThanxSmiley:

Sir, you have to be hardworking man.

I cleaned my tank walls once every 2 weeks with 3M green wool...and I switched on my 2 x T5 for about 8hrs daily...

Kindda strange, the lions somehow knew when it is house cleaning time and automatically hid in the 'cave'.

Hence, I did not kenna stung so far...my whole arm went into the tank man...

The tricky part is the sea urchins. I will move them to one corner while I clean the other...and they also somehow knew I'm cleaning and would stop climbing up the rocks and walls to avoid stinging their 'master'...

Simply amazing!!!

Thanks for the compliments.

I was at CF yesterday and came across a young whitish Volitan Lionfish.

Its long fins were white color with dark strips (looked more like a white tiger than lion), almost wanted to get it...

Could this be one of the albino types? or the youngs of the volitan family all looked like this? They will get darker coloration when older?
