DI/RO Units in SG

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am a newbie to marine fish keeping. I have been keeping freshwater fishes for 4 years. Currently, I have an african cichilid tank, a koi pond and a nano reef (2 months old). In my area, the tap water has about 12.5ppm of nitrates. I am using seachem safe for the time being but it is troublesome to mix the water everyday to top up the tanks. May I know where can i find a DI/RO unit and also the price? Thanks.

Hi bro, i saw the madpetz web. I am not into buying such systems online. Hahas. I am the more conventional person who will buy things at LFS only. At least i dun have to take the trouble to post the stuff back in case of any defects. However, thanks a lot. I got an estimation of the prices on the web so i can do my accounting better:D Student here so i wanna have my nano reef as budget as possible.

Bro, they do have a store at Sin Ming / Upper Thomson area. You can check out the units there in their display shop.

Madpetz also sell resins and carbon by bucket so its refillable easily.

after that you can also drop by at Reef DEpot which sells RO units. Another option.

For budget option, look for 2nd hand crystal pro units - around $80 - $120.

Hopefully it comes with refillable cartridge. It it does not, you can also get that from Madpetz.

cheers and good luck !

Hi. Do u mean u used the nitrate test kit to measure the water from your tap?

For small tanks, it may be more economical to buy distilled water rather than invest in ro/di unit. Cos besides the one-time purchase of the unit, there's recurring cost involved (resins and carbon). A replacement set of carbon and resin will set you back by $80+ (iirc).

Also RO/DI units have wastage, whereas DI, there isn't.

Suggest to go either pay per use (distilled water) or get a 2nd hand DI unit (crystal pro) as suggested by Jacky.

If u can, drop by madpetz, the last time I went about 3 months back, they have one RO/DI demo unit.

Wheres madpets? I think for now i will continue using my seachem safe to detoxify nitrates and chlorine. My tank has a cooler fan so the evaporation rate is high. Normally i top up about 330ml a day.

Hahas. 80-120 bucks are still within budget. If i gotta replace the cartridge inside, how much will it cost? I need to plan long term as well. Dun wanna incur too much cost.

Oh yeah. Answer to your first question. Yeap. I do have test kits for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH. Thus i measure directly from the tap.

The refiilable cartridg should be about $10 each. you will need three. (one time cost)

The resins cost $35. can last you about 9 -12 months for a nano.

The carbon cost about $12. should last 12 months or more.

I am just guesstimating..... going check with Ken from Madpetz. Very friendly guy.

For location, go check out Madpetz thread in the forum.

It is stated there and the opening hrs too. think its closed on Mon and Tues.

a bucket, a fine mesh bag, resin and pump. put the mesh bag with resin and run the pump. withinn 1 hours, can achieve TDS reading of zero for ard 60L. this is much faster than those canister filtering system. hope this help.
