Hi to all...

As a newbie, I hope to have some advise on a simple setup for marine tank. I am looking into a FOWLR concept.

I have been reading the sticky notes till my eyes all sticky and having indigestion from it all

Greatly appreciate if anyone could just give me a rough guide on some question that I have... Thanks!

1) How to prevent rust from occuring in furnitures

2) Thickness recommended for a 3ft marine tank

3) Differences between treated / untreated LR

4) Are live sand compulsory

5) $$$ for LR and LS... reason I am asking this is because a LFS (North) quoted me a beautiful $$$

1). avoid splashing n dun put rust prone funrniture near the tank

2). at least 8mm for height 1.5ft n 10mm for height 2ft

3). price n quality n time taken to cycle ur tank

4). no... but sand is a must... go for a DSB if possible (4 inches size 0 sandbed)

5). good LR shld range more than $10/kg... good LR would mean alot of coraline (purplish areas) without any sulphur/ammonia smell (cured). Fiji is quite a good LR, price shld be ard $16/kg... make sure they r cured as well... CF do help u to cure when u buy... another place for gd LR i wld recommend ML

My two cents worth:

1. Furniture rusts anyway. MOst logical is to keep evaporation rate low by having chiller and protect your furniture by cleaning often?!

2. Be kiasu... but depend on the width and height of your tank. Different amounts of water = different amounts of pressure. 10 or 12mm should be safe. Add euro-bracing to be safer.

5. Best way is to shop and ask around. I ever saw LR going for as low as $3/kg to $16/kg. WHen you get to know 3ft tank need average 40~70kg of LR (depending on width and height), $10/kg difference translatres into a lot of $$$ saved for getting test kits, skimmer, pumps and etc later. Got mine for $6/kg. Me thinks looks real purplish-red and nice. So red that I have to purposely buy a few pieces of white/uncoloured ones to "dilute". Kind folks around here tell me the red stuff is coraline algae which is good to have. A bit dirty though and have seaweed so must spend some time cleaning it. Treated sand sell in S.North for around $18 whereas untreated sand goes for $6~8. All you got to do is spend time and wash. Put your love into your tank and it will love you back. HOPEFULLY

Guess I would placed the tank in the study room... curtains and windows shut mostly.

My existing IOS 3ft would not be pratical since its only 6mm thick.

Do excuse me if I really sound like a fool, I am having difficulty understand some of the term such as 'CF' 'DSB' and 'ML' maybe there is a thread which I can refer these term...

Thanks... I am surprise you know tat I was referring to S.North

and many thanks for the information on the weight of LR I need in a 3ft tank. It does really add up on the higher side if they are at $10.00/kg

You may want to refer to this chart to determine what is the thickness that is needed. Do take note that the height of the tank is also critical. Normally, a safety factor of at least 2.9 is recommended. Euro-bracing will also helps.
