Self Introduction and questions

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Kenna infected this disease from a visit to marine LFS recently.

Spend and wasted a bomb... but feeling darn good about it :)

Few doubts, hoping the experts here can shed some light

1) What is the correct salinity I should be gunning for?

Currently I am on 1.018

I heard people advise me from 1.017 all the way to 1.025 ( I have few fishes but tonnes of live rocks and corals that I dun even recognise)

2) How do I make sure the water I used are safe?

I bought a filter from Jireh Marine for $125 that the auntie claims to be able to filter chlorine metals and all other inpurities. Does the filter work that well? If it doesn't can I get a refund from auntie and what other alternatives do I have?

3) I bought reefmax from Jireh Part A to Part F (whole series). Is reefmax that good cos I cant seem to find any review on it? If not, what alternatives should I get?

4) Presently I only got 1 test kit for Phosphate. Any other test kit should I buy? Which brand is better?

5) How to tell if the coral had died? I have 1 coral now which is lime green in colour initially but now 1 patch is turning to white (as in colour of dead coral)

6) How do I feed my corals? The label on the can ask me to off my filter for 1 to 2 hours to feed the corals. I bought many cans of refrigerated food (from Jireh) but I am sure there is a better way of feeding them.

7) Are the refrigerated canned food from Jireh of quality?

Thank you to all bros here for their contribution in advance.

i reccomend 1.025 cuz me, my corals and fishes love it that way. 1.018 is really low...as in seriously, go put more salt in

LOL....u dont need all of those dude. I wouldnt even reccomend that for beginners. If say u overdose, without test kits measuring all those stuff that you're adding, its dangerous. So just stay to the two part dosing method, it works well if you're just keeping a nano. I believe that all those should only be used if u want to have a tight control over your parameters. Getting all those is also quite ex. Or if you know how to, get chemicals like Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride.......but thats when you have the experience.

For test kits, i can think of many right now.

1:Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

2:Calcium, magnesium and strontium

3: carbonate hardness To test for KH

4:iodine(dont really need one)

Why not get crystal pro from aquamarin or ZERO from madpetz? I think u can get the simple DI one for less than $100. Heard good reviews of them too.

What kind of food u need?

For fish: Get pellets, flakes or henry reef gourmet. I'm using henry reef gourmet as my staple.

For corals: 5-in one coral food....actually there are MANY types of coral food, but i'm using 5in one from aquapharm.

Hi Scuba Boy,

welcome to SRC, i hope to be able to help you on your question by answering below;

1) If you are keeping coral , the salinity should be 1.023 & Above .

2) I think the filter which you mention are the RO/DI water filter . It is used to produce "Pure water" for salt mix which is safe for your tank.

3) Reefmax addictive serve its purposes to help maintain the tank's parameter . All addictive is the almost the same except for the brand / price and very must depend on personal preferences.

4) the basic test kits you should get is N02 and ammonia for a fish only system, and additional test kit for Ca,mg,KH, and N03 for a reef tank.

5) If the coral start to turn white or not opening, it mean it is dieing or unhealthy .

6)You can either feed your coral by "Target feed" or simply pour inside your tank. The coral will respond better if you switch off your filter / skimmer during feeding to prevent your foods being skim out.

There is Tons of information available in this forum , you can simply do some research by using our search function. Doing more research before your purschase will help you to become a smart consumer :)

I do hope you still feel the same way 2 months down the road.

1) What is the correct salinity I should be gunning for?

Currently I am on 1.018

I heard people advise me from 1.017 all the way to 1.025 ( I have few fishes but tonnes of live rocks and corals that I dun even recognise)

1.018 is too low. 1.021 for fish only and 1.025 for reef.

PS: might be good to do more research on the corals before you purchase. some are pretty delicate.

2) How do I make sure the water I used are safe?

I bought a filter from Jireh Marine for $125 that the auntie claims to be able to filter chlorine metals and all other inpurities. Does the filter work that well? If it doesn't can I get a refund from auntie and what other alternatives do I have?

Not sure which filter you are referring to but do note that all filters have medias which need to be replaced regularly after they are depleted.

Doubt you can get any refund from them.

If you are keeping hardy corals, you can actually use tap water with water conditioners. a much cheaper option.

3) I bought reefmax from Jireh Part A to Part F (whole series). Is reefmax that good cos I cant seem to find any review on it? If not, what alternatives should I get?

Don't think many reefers use them. I was not able find any comments on that product series too. Personally I would go for Kent Marine additives.

4) Presently I only got 1 test kit for Phosphate. Any other test kit should I buy? Which brand is better?

Salifert is pretty ok. Else the new D&D range looks good too.

Start with NO2, NO3, PH, MG, KH, Ca

5) How to tell if the coral had died? I have 1 coral now which is lime green in colour initially but now 1 patch is turning to white (as in colour of dead coral)

Think it is dying. When it is dead, trust me, you will know. :)

6) How do I feed my corals? The label on the can ask me to off my filter for 1 to 2 hours to feed the corals. I bought many cans of refrigerated food (from Jireh) but I am sure there is a better way of feeding them.

you are using that product so follow that product instructions.

7) Are the refrigerated canned food from Jireh of quality?

No.

Bro, strongly suggest you make a trip to MarineLife, SeaLife, talk to some of the reefers on this forum. They can help to cut short your teething agonies in this hobby.

cheers

Jacky.

actually, newbies should talk to a reliable senior reefer before doing anything.

Completely agree with jackywongto. I got alot of advice from sealife but i must seriously make a trip to ML. It should be my new year resolution.

TErryz: LOL!

Sigh... I do not know any experienced reefer here or in my social circle. It's very much like stabbing in the dark.

The next best alternative is to find a LFS that is willing to give advise but I must say that their motivation is only to sell products. Not all of them but some of them...

Not blaming anyone but myself for jumping into it without proper research. Wasted a couple of thousands.....pain.

In any case, I will persevere.... :eyebrow:

Wish me luck
