Most people will put it as a counter-measure for any imbalance in the setup, which might crack the tank when it is under pressure. If you have a good tank maker, they should level everything for you with a level gauge and add shims whenever necessary.

I think it's necessary to distribute the weight of the tank evenly to prevent a single pressure point thatbmay potentially break the tank due to the weight of the whole setup.

To even the pressure especially...sometimes, salt may accumulate beneath your tank while maintenance and they are like rubbing rocks against your tank...u know what will happen in long run.

let me go even further

its a necessary practise. Never trust anyone else. Not even the so called best tank builders. The fault could not even be in the tank but your stand or furniture or the floor??? Too many outside factors that can create pressure points in your tank. And an the water in the house is the least that can happen when a tank explodes. Large pieces of glass flying at speeds of up to 100MpH because of the initial explosion can easily kill someone.

the thicker your styrofoam bottom is the better it will level the tank by natural pressure. (min 2 to 3 inches)

rubber mats are ok for small tanks, they're quite thin and firm. styro gives you more tolerance

Even though the tank cabinet may be perfectly level brand new, being wood, the frame may start to warp over time as moisture sets in. Then the base glass will start to stress unevenly. In time, KAPOW!!!!!

I once place my spare 2ft tank in my toilet upright without foam.

One fine day, I saw a big crack line across.

Then I realized that my neighbor downstairs was doing some renovation and the vibration causes the tank to rub against the floor and crack....
