If u happen to measure SG with hydrometer in different water temperture, readings will vary. Retrometer will provide a more constant and accurate reading regardless of water temperture. That's why the price is so..much apart

The refractive index of water is affected by density of the water which is affected by temperature therefore even when using a refractometer you must note the temperature to convert S.G. into salinity.

If you are interested in this phenomenen, you can search on Lorentz-Lorenz relation which describes the relationship between refraction of light and the density of a translucent body.
