I have a corcea clam which bought about 2 weeks ago. Today, noticed that a portion of dead flesh detached which came from the bottom of the shelf where it sat. However, the clam seems to look alright; can open and contract. Did anyone encounter such a problem before? Is it normal?

Is their byssal.. he is shifting location... probably he dun like the current placement but make sure your parameter suit them.. and placement secure.. otherwise topple them may resulted damage... Also take note of pests.. this might attract pests to attack their bottom flesh.. Cheers..

Sad to say that my clam had up the lorry since after it has detached the byssal. Condition was getting worse by each day.

Will get a replacement when I got time to do the shopping.

There's a good chance that some of the byssal organ got ripped out with the fibrous threads. It which case it's likely your clam is bleeding to death. At least, that's what I know from working with mussels.
