SRC Member Cedric Posted January 6, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2004 Hi, bought this skimmer to replace my tunze 220 last year and decided to share with everybody the pros and cons. The picture shows how it looks fresh out of the box. Pros: 1) The workmanship is very good, the entire body is made with acrylic and not some cheapo plastic. 2)The skimmer comes with this air silencer and adjustment thingy by the side. This allows for fine adjustment of air flow. 3) The pump is joined to the skimmer body via pump to union, union to clear pipe, pipe to elbow, elbow to pipe, pipe to union and finally union to skimmer body. All these pipings and joints seems like high quality stuff! 4) There is also a knob by the side to control the flow of the water exiting the skimmer which in turns control the water height in the skimmer. Really Neat! Cons: 1) The pump is an Atman 3000l/hr 60watt powerhead. Too power hungry for my liking. 2) The bubbles produced are fine and the chamber fills up with white foam. However, I feel that the bubbles still seems to be bigger than those produced by needle wheel or spindle wheel impellers. 3) The union joint is glued to the pump and impossible to remove! The union joints used here are so good that I cannot find it here in Singapore! I tried looking for it coz I'm worried the atman pump may not last long enough. Secondly, I may like to upgrade the pump. Conclusion: The skimmer took me 3 days to break in. Now its producing black Kopi-O! Just glad that I made the right choice to swap out the tunze for this coz I feel that my tunze is undersized for my tank. Apologies for not taking a pic of it with the kopi-O coz I dun have the digi cam with me any more. Cheers! Quote Comments are welcome!

SRC Member ervine Posted January 6, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2004 HMMm... funny, looks like a DIY... what kind of skimmer is it BTW? Venturi?
SRC Member Cedric Posted January 7, 2004 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 7, 2004 Well, its called TURBO-SKIMMER, from Marine Sources, think its from Hongkong, not too sure. Yup, it looks just like a DIY, a very well made and copied DIY I must say! As to what kind of skimmer it is, its sort of like a venturi pump skimmer except it does not have a venturi. Air is sucked into the pump and the impeller simply chops it up. Quote Comments are welcome!

SRC Member clowntrigger Posted January 7, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 7, 2004 Where can get the atman pump which can produce air bubbles? Any other brand which can perform the same function as well? If I am not wrong, the impeller is just those normal one with 6 blades. These will be able to chop up bubbles, but not as fine as those used in needlewheel kind. You can try by using a normal PH which a few blades kind, you will still be able to get bubbles. I used to own a ruwal skimmer, they uses a rio pump with 6 blades and that is how they produce the bubbles for the skimmer.
Kong
so, what ur saying is that your rio pump also uses the same method to create bubbles. And not with a venturi tube?

And not with a venturi tube? yep, that is right. The only downside is that the bubbles created is not fine enough when you compare to the needlewheel used by H&S in their aquabee pump.
