this is the risk that i decide to take after i think my diy overflow is ugly so i drill a hole in my main tank to drain the water out to the sump

Can the hole handle the flow rate? I've similar setup before, water flows thru hole is very very slow.

think should not be the problem as the hole size is 32mm wat i scare of is the return pump will not pump back the water fast enough

Have you started your return pump?

From my understanding, durso pipe and overflow box act as a siphon (no air were trapped in the pipe). Whereas in this setup, water just fall into the pipe and air will restrict the flow while rushing against the water.

I've actually tested this in 2 different tanks and both failed. If your's would work, I realy wish to know the secret.

guys i have a little problem like crab has said the return pipe have a very slow return rate as air is trap inside

so can i drill a hole on the top of the elbow to let the trap air to escape thorugh the hole do u think will it make the return rate faster

hmm... most likely will. But if overflow rate fast won't water like splash out of the hole(s)??

You may want to consider building the durso pipe. It is similar to your idea, but without the risk of splashing + better siphon

Isn't the durso pipe very noisy?? Cause of ###### air in too. like gurgling sound. How to fix?? The top is open one right?? or is it supposed to be closed?

its noisy if you don't cover the air hole.

if you cover it dont u think the siphon will be weaker ??? btw i use a 25mm hole elbow dont think it is enough for ehiem 1260 maybe i drill another hole cos my Hilea water pump (5550l/hr) is on the way

the hole u see does it crack ?? but there just some chip off round the edge cos it the 2nd hole i drill the first hole i drill is the sump tank

the drill bit cos me $40 as for the drill i take my dad one hahahahha

hmm.... 3.5 cm like a bit small for overflow... too slow for 3 ft dun u think? or is it ok? haha.
