SRC Member Golf Posted January 5, 2004 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 5, 2004 One week ago, I started to suffer diatoms/ algae bloom on the sand surface. SRC Member Matt06 Posted January 5, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 5, 2004 Cleaning of filter medium as well as clearing of sand bed off any uneaten food and so on, try to wipe your tank glass more offen, this is what I do, what you got looks like red slime algae, by the way, your "Cauliflower" is a fox coral - Very big and nice... Also, you should place your sun corals in those ares which does not receive direct light source, as they are "sun" itself so no need so much light input(haha, joking!!) LOONG
Hi, you have got a very nice tank. Can I ask you what kind of water (sea water or tap water mix with synthetic salt) do you use? I'm quite confused because different people tell me different thing. Please advise. Thank you.
Sponsor Glare Posted January 9, 2004 Sponsor Share Posted January 9, 2004 You should check your phosphate and nitrate levels. These are the culprits that generally contributes to algae blooms. Also do not overfeed your fishes cause it contributes to higher nutrient levels if the food is left uneaten. Anyway, very nice and neat tank
SRC Member Golf Posted January 9, 2004 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 9, 2004 Hi Loong ! Previously I used Synthetic Salt mixed with De-chlorinated water. Recently switch to sea-water (after UV filter). No problem so far. Advantages of sea-water ================= 1. Simple and Easy...no need to mix synthetic salt and stage it for 12~24hrs. 2. Sea water already contained some live organism...my corals and LS seemed to become "livelier". Disadvantages of Sea-Water ==================== Sea-water source is always a concern (contaminant) ....some LFS does not aeronate and circulate them constantly...causing live organism inside to die-off. Plus most LFS may not perform UV filter to kill off bad baterias. If interested in Sea-Water...recommends you to Wat*r-C*rcle LFS (near Jalan Besar Stadium). Selling $1.5 per 10 litres. But most marine avocates will suggest to stick on with Synthetic Salt like Tropic Marine. Most fail-safe ...no worries about any contaminant or sea-water source. Also, can do it anytime at home...just a little troublesome. Just my two cents worth... Golf
SRC Member Golf Posted January 9, 2004 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 9, 2004 Will try to get Poly-Filter to control Phosphate and Nitrate level....just bought a few stalks of Red Mangroves...LFS claimed it can help to minimise Nitrate level. Lets see.....
SRC Member clowntrigger Posted January 9, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 9, 2004 Will try to get Poly-Filter to control Phosphate and Nitrate level....just bought a few stalks of Red Mangroves...LFS claimed it can help to minimise Nitrate level. Lets see..... If you want to control phosphate, you should use rowaphos or contraphos, I dont think polyfilter will remove phosphate. You have lots of cyano growing on the sand bed, advise is to remove them by ###### them during your water change. You will suck out some sand during the process, wash the sand and then put in back into the tank. Make sure you only suck the fine layer of sand, just enough to remove the cyano. Other than that, you have a got a nice tank.
SRC Member Golf Posted January 10, 2004 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 10, 2004 Yup.....follow your advise to remove the cyano layer on the fine sand surface..... 1. Bought Phosphate Remover from Fluval. 2. Add four stalks of Red Mangroves. 3. Reduce lighting duration from 12 hrs to 10.5hrs. 4. Reduce feeding quantity and frequency (from 3x to 2x). Will monitor and update later. Kind regards, Golf
