mengyang_neo
Hi guys I'm looking to link a new tank to existing sump Cycling still required for new sand, rocks and water? Any one has any advices on how to go about and any complications regarding issues like pump return rates? thanks in advance I think cycling will still be require as now there is more volume of water, however cycling time will be greatly reduce as this tank is connected to your existing tank. xaine
With new sand and rocks, it would take time for it to inhabit the beneficial bacteria. Unless you are using live sand and rocks from other setup, that can be reduced greatly. If you are linking this new tank to the sump, do ensure that your equipment (like the skimmer) is capable of supporting both tanks. And with 2 pumps in the sump, the heat generated by the number of pumps (for CR and 2x return) will be increased, hence cooling will need to be considered depending on your livestock. As for return rates, it will just depend on your tank size. What goes up will just come down via the overflow. Ensure that you have a one-way valve for the return pipes as in event of a power-cut, I doubt your sump is capable of filling up (say 1-2 inch worth of water) before it gets cuts off. Unless you place the return slightly higher to minimise the backflow. SRC Member tunicate Posted May 12, 2011 SRC Member Share Posted May 12, 2011 Need more details & preferably pics of your sump. Sorry I realized I must've misunderstood you after reading some of the replies. I thought you were asking about linking a new refugium tank to your current sump. RockyBoy
Yep, anything new tank with new rocks and sands should be cycled. Best if kick start by putting the beneficial bacteria, then slowly add livestocks.
