5 yellow wrasse KOed in my tank

what puzzled me most was they were feeding hours ago

and dead the next moment, no struggling nor last breath

no obvious sign of serious injury

any tell tale sign of hitchhiker predator?

thanks

from 3 different batch

cant determine the external wound are cause by predator or cleaner shrimp as they are happily munching on it already

i feed seaweed, frozen mysis and ON formula 1 & 2 pellet

i doubt its the food source as other fish has no issue

btw its 5 death over the a period of 2 months

May I asked whether the fishes dead belong to the same types?

As in are they all bottom dwellers? like gobies

or they stay near to the rock crevices? like blennies

Or is your victims are a mixture of free swimmers and the bottom and middle section dwellers.

Usually hitchhikers predators like crabs/ mantis/ super alien worms aren't really free swimming, if your fishes are found dead near certain regions of the tank with missing parts, u might have a predator, not 100% though.

One way to find out, lay a trap at night :)

i notice all my yellow wrasse sleep at the bottom left hand corner

that is why i suspect hitchhiker predator

ok now we have cicumstantial evidence, all we need is to find the culprit :)

set a trap and lure the culprit out, if there is one to begin with :)

We see a pattern here, the serial murderer must have had a traumatic experience with yellow wrasse, now manifested into uncontrollable act.

This is wat happens when u watched too much CSI zzz

trap look something like this?

CrabTrap.jpg

Strongly suspect a mantis shrimp lurking among the rocks. Or the horror of horrors...a bobbit worm (this jerk may start small but can grow to 1 m. It's a fierce bugger and has jaws like that of a centipede. Had a few in my tank a couple of years back. Tagged along with some uncured rocks.

What I did was to painstakingly remove the rocks and thoroughly checked them piece by piece. Yup...it's total demolition; but I got those damned b****** after losing some precious fished.

Give it some thought.

Finbir.

  • 2 weeks later...

doubt is any creature attacking the fish.

are the fishes from the same lfs?

did u acclimitise them? or rather the same way for all 5 wrasse?

purchased different time from different lfs

longest survival was 2 weeks iirc

any updates? :)

tried placing the trap on 2 different occasion

manage to catch bristle worm only

side note:

my MIA yellow flasher came out after more than a month, real skinny and tail broken

i believe it would have died if there is hitchhiker predator

currently its out during feed only, but every time it come out

the cleaner wrasse will "clean" it

and worse, mystery wrasse will chase it

the worst is, my black female clown will nip it

hope it can pull through

If you want your yellow flasher to survive, it is better to betta box your cleaner, mystery and clown. Feed the yellow flasher until it is fat and healthy for about 1 week then set the fishes out. If you try to put yellow flasher in betta box now, it maybe too late as it will not survive a small environment.
