Giant calms filter feed like other clams, but they also get food from symbiotic algae. This extra food allows these clams to grow to a massive size. Giant calms are rare in many areas because they are overfished.

just imagine how long it takes to farm these ... 2-4 years in hatchery to grow 3-4 inches, spend another 1-2 years in cages to protect them from predators, then another 3-10 years for them to become large enough to be 'safe' in the reef ... safe from natural predators, not human though ... :angry2: brood clams where eggs/sperm are collected weigh up to 200-300 lbs ! :shock:
