SRC Member seamonkee Posted January 3, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 3, 2004 Ok folks... I know this is a silly qn.... I am adjusting the location of my clam and then it dawn onto me that there is a small "mouth" hole at one end of the clam.... If I am placing my clam slanting... is there a right side up? Meaning small "mouth" hole on top or bottom?
FuEl
place them upright facing the light. No need to tilt them or anything. The 'mouth' is actually the siphon. They have 2 'mouths' one for water intake...the other is for ejecting the water. The one ejecting water looks like a thin tubing. SRC Member hoppinghippos Posted January 4, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 4, 2004 as for direction to flow, don't worry, the clam will rotate by itself to its best liked position.
SRC Member Tanzy Posted January 4, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 4, 2004 Generally, not necessary to worry but if you want to fuss about it, Daniel Knop recommends to place the clam with the byssal openning at the lowest position of the clam to reduce stress on the byssal gland. In other words, the hole at the bottom should be lower. Quote Warning: Heavy handed moderator in operation. Threads and post are liable to be deleted or moved without prior notification. DeepBlue
from my exp..the clams will adjust and move if it finds that the position is not suitable or its not geting enough lights....my 2 ' big clam has moved more than 2 inches since I placed it on my sandbed... In other words, the hole at the bottom should be lower. just to add on, I think what Tanzy suggested is more important coz when clam grows, the byssal gland will tend to grow upwards. So by placing it as Tanzy has suggested(the byssal gland at the lowest), it will facilitate the growth upwards rather than putting it the other way round and causing the byssal to get detached and stressed.
