if you inspect it properly and don't see anything wrong with it, and the price is ok with you there's not reason not to buy it.

The main reason people go for 2nd hand stuff is probably due to budget concern.

I am not saying it is not good to buy 2nd hand item, in fact it is a great way to save money

Most of the time, you will not regret buying 2nd hand stuff, as they work just as good as first hand items. (At least from my experiences, i met lots of great and sincere sellers)

But this doesn't mean there are room for complacency, you need to do more research on the item you are planning to buy, identify the pros and cons of getting a new one and a old one.

The fair market value is applied here, between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or to sell.

Do take note that the price are cheap for various reasons.

Just a few examples,

for a tank there might be scratches and irremovable dirt where new tank don't, there might even be leakage of water!

for equipment that relies on power head / engine / compressor / etc. , there is a diminishing rate of its power

most 2nd hand equipment doesn't have any warranty left, so if it's spoil, there goes the money

Basically the item wont be "Perfect", and if you are a perfectionist it's gonna ruin your sense of ownership for the item.

If budget is also not really your concern (Sadly budget is always my concern ) and the price of the 2nd hand item is not really dirt cheap, I would probably suggest you go for first hand item. (Example, 1st hand cost $100, 2nd hand cost $70.. what for buy 2nd hand?)

There are unseen "risk" in buying 2nd hand goods, hence you really need to compare the cost of these "risks" and the amount you saved by purchasing 2nd hand goods.

It will definitely be better if you can provide more details regarding the 600 dollars lobang, for us to give suggestions =D

I guess it is all up to the individual...caveat emptor ... let the buyer beware ... most people sell 2nd goods to upgrade or when they have excess spares but there may be exceptions ... so just be careful. Overall the hobby is for enjoyment , so relax.

If I'm selling a 2nd hand tank, I'd be happy to fill it up with tap water to show the buyer that it has no leaks & in working condition. After the deal, if the tank starts to leak due to rough handling, the seller should not be obligated to help fix the problem.

1) place the lights to the front potion and inspect for scratches

2) check the cabinet, make sure you like it: accessibility, equipments, design, center support for larger tank etc etc

3) lastly pray for the best, 1 of my 2nd hand tank leak after a month lol

For 2nd hand tank and equipment, you can easily check their resale price in passer malam to see whether if an item has been overpriced, of course, condition of the tank or equipment counts. I bought four 2nd tanks before and all no prob, best from bros who are active here with good reputation. Check the condition and assess yourself and sometimes really have to go by trust and integrity of the seller.

Chk for the reputation of the tank maker too.

For example, i know of a reputable tank maker who will guarantee his tank for a good 10 years. Though a little more pricy but that goes to show his confidence in the quality of the workmanship

Think about it, the worst thing that could happen to a reefer is when he/she save a little on a tank and only to find that it leaks or break after a while...the damage is far greater than the savings.

Second hand tank is perfectly fine and a great way to save as other bros has pointed out. Get a good transporter / tank mover and you will likely to minimise the risk of damage due to transport.
