SRC Member onizukaa Posted February 22, 2011 SRC Member Share Posted February 22, 2011 filter sock is a must use!!!! my water have been so clean and lesser dirt at the bottom of the tank. and when you clean the filter socks, you can sense satisfaction from the amount of dirt it collected. you can place it with the holder from sponsor http://www.madpetz.c...products_id=319 or aquafauna. Attached below pic of how it is just after 2 days from the output of my skimmer!( it's pure white before using)
SRC Member tunicate Posted February 23, 2011 SRC Member Share Posted February 23, 2011 (1) You can size your refugium larger for more effective biological filtration. (2) The water level in your skimmer compartment will depend on your baffles in your refugium(currently indicated as 280mm), not 320mm. (3) The water level in your return pump compartment will fluctuate due to evaporation & water top-up. Hence, the smaller its size, the faster it will fluctuate. Having said that, I guess there's probably something occupying that corner that requires you to design the return compartment in that shape. vincegoh
The water level will be higher so that there will be no fluctuation of water level at the return pump compartment. Yes, at the return pump corner, there is a structural column that protude into my tank area. Main concerns is whether I want to place the PS at the last compartment or the first compartment. I m making the compartment bigger as I want to have flexible in add equipment if necessary, eg a calcium reactor.
SRC Member tunicate Posted February 24, 2011 SRC Member Share Posted February 24, 2011 Main concerns is whether I want to place the PS at the last compartment or the first compartment. PS is typically placed immediately right after mechanical filter. BTW, it is good to cater for an additional overflow outlet into the sump to feed future equipments, or refugium, or scrubber, or...etc
vincegoh
I have 2 overflow outlet into the sump. 1 go to filter sock and the other goes directly to the PS. I have difficulty attaching the PDF showing the setup though.

Can I custom the sump to hold the filter sock instead of using a plastic holder? Thanks.
SRC Member tunicate Posted February 25, 2011 SRC Member Share Posted February 25, 2011 When filter socks starts to clog up, it will overflow. Hence your holder design needs to cater for this. Most off-the-shelf filter sock holder have their bracket set lower than the edge of the sump tank. (Below is a sample pic showing what I meant)
vincegoh
Will the filter sock need to be fully above the water level or partially submerged? What is the usual length and diameter of filter sock? Thanks, bro.
