hi ppl, had a idea to make a sump. But worry me is tat, if one of the pump tat is used to return the water or the water to the sump fails to functions, means tat either one of the main tank or the sump will get flooded rite..

Everything's sold. Back in 2yrs time.

think only the sump will flood......but before you start the pump running, you can try to make sure there is no overflowing of water to the sump. if overflow rate and return flow rate are the same or almost the same, then there might not be flooding when your pumps fail.

maybe wrong but hope this helps!

but if the return pump from the sump malfunction, then the main tank keep pumping water down, then my tank will end up no water..den my floor will be flooded..i juz scare this part.. maybe going for a eheim external filter to be safe..

If you intend to use 2 pumps, one for return to main tank and one to bring water from main tank to sump, then don't! You don't need a malfunction to flood or completely drain the sump. It's impossible to get the two pumps to be the exact flowrate. Only use one pump and let the water return by gravity the other way.

if no water is pump up from the sump, then no water will flow down

from the main tank. (no need of pump in tank to pump water down

to sump)

Hi,

Btw where to get this 1 way valve? Wat happen once the return pump has resume its operation, will the overflow continue to operate? I mean using I-Box worry that there is air trap so causing water intermittent.

If using I-box, there should not be any problem.

I am using one and have tested the system by shutting off my return pump. After I switch on the return pump again, the overflow will contiune to siphon the water from my main tank to my sump.

Hi

I was advise to siphon the air from the I-box U shape pipe....what is the impact if I leave the air inside the U shape pipe? Slow down the speed of the suction?

ps: aStRoBo|, pai say borrow your posting.

If there is air inside the u-shape pipe, i guess the siphon might break.

I am not sure as well. Maybe some experts can give us some facts?

Hi Strat,

Have you ever tried switch off for abt 20-30 mins or longer? coz worried that air may slip in so to cause the break ( guess logically ). Once power failure occur, I don't expect the power supply will resume back as soon as possible. So, is better to try it out before flooding happen.

Hi,

Even an external canister can cause flood. Unless you must do some maintenance, like the replacement of those air tight rubber. coz after some time these rubber will becomes hard(No more spongy effect) therefore once power failure the water will leak out. I've experience once somewhere in year 2002.

it's easy if your sump tank is much smaller than your main tank. just do some simple calculation.

but first of all, your supply pump in your main tank has to be near to the surface. this way should your return pump fails, the water in the main tank will not run empty and your sump will not overflow.

second, know the volume of water in your sump and n make sure your main tank should have enough empty space for this volume of water. should the supply pump fails, your main tank will not overflow.
