Is it okay to run the return pump outside the sump?

I am asking if this is posible so that the pump wont add heat to the water, specially for setup not using a chiller.

Or maybe submerge the pump in a separate container of water not part of the tank water to keep the pump from getting hot.

yup, i ran my eheim 1262 outsump

yes it is very possible but your pump must first be able to run out of water. look at the pump specs and description, if it says its suitable in and out of water (like ehiem or aquabees) you're good to go

I'm doing exactly like what you say, outsump without chiller.

Below are additional consideration for outsump pump:

(1) You'd need some good plumbing work to ensure that all joints in the pipings outside the sump to be totally leak-free.

(2) Use flexible tubings at the pump's inlet & outlet to absorb the vibration.

(3) Install union ball valves at both the inlet & outlet end of your pump so that pump can be detached for servicing or replacement.

Tip: I sit my return pump inside a plastic ice-ream box. This is to collect the bit of salt water when I need to detach the pump.

Ehiem can do the job. But make sure everything is in place. Else flood your house.

bro ur pic too small. but the drawing seems to be the type of setup i did before and surely it works *note i am using eheim 1262.

do note that some pumps can't be used externally!

Yes, it'll work. Don't place above sump. Not stable & prone to accident.
