Water Circulation

My tank is 4ft x 2ft x 2.5ft and I am currently using Ecotech Marine MP40W as wave maker for the tank. I wonder if it is sufficient for my tank? am considering another gadget to increase water flow to better control algae and to wash off teh detritus from the corals. But I am also mindful if I stir the water too drastically, my poor fishes will all hide and seek shelter in the rocks.

Any comments please.

Maybe you can tell us what coral you are keeping and also a pic of your rock scape and the position of your wave maker. =)

Sufficient will depend on the type of stocks u keep, yr return flow and placement. By now u should know yr dead spot and for that, u can consider options available. Good to answer bro mengyang question so that he can help to advice. Good day.

Hi MengYang @ Please see attached pic of my tank. The wavemaker is located on the right side of the tank and the return flow is at the back also on the right.

Corals that I am keeping include:

-LPS Hard Corals : Elegance Coral x1; Brain Coral x2

- Red Mushroom, pretty small ones

- Sea Fans x1

- Anemones x 2

- Polyps : Button Polyps x 2; waving hands x1; Colony Polyps x1; Starburst Polyps x 1

...and two clams

u might have some dead spot at those caves ... do monitor the flow there...

Ey looks like a lot of dead spot. Ot a bit, your chiller can run a 4x2x2.5? My 1/2hp is taking 30mins plus to cool down the tank

For the coral that you are keeping, MP40W should be enough, but as what the rest mentioned, you might have some dead spot where the there is no circulation of wave. You can play around with the different setting of MP40W once you are done, maybe you can add some small wave maker to direct at the dead spot if you still have any.

Thanks Guys for all your advice. Yes, I played around with the wave maker and adjusted it to the max. The dead spots are around the back of the tank and like most of you say, areas in between the rocks. I will prolly get a small wave maker and direct it towards those dead spots and looking at my tank, it is still quite barren and I intend to add more corals, only after I have gotten rid completely the nudis (if there is such a thing as completely!)...arghhhhhhhhhh. Still find one or two in some of my corals.

Maybe you can keep to take out your coral and dip in coral rx and add yellow wrasses for prevention. All the best. =)

Thanks Mengyang...I hv been doing that and the nudis situation has improved althou I still find one or two. My yellow wrasses into hiding. Haha.

Somehow not all my corals are opening up fully. The parameters seem to be within range and satisfactory. Still trouble-shooting and I just admire with awe when I see fellow reefers here posting nice and colourful and fully opened corals on this forum

Yellow wrasses are prone to hiding in sand... but they will do their work quietly so as long as they are surviving it should be working (how much i guess depending on how hardworking la! haha!).

With regards to the placement of MP40, i notice it is on the same side as your return pipe... perhaps can consider putting on opposite end? Also MP40 cannot be tilted so the bottom portion may not get much flow, perhaps get another wavemaker to point downwards.. Not sure if this helps.

Hi Ketchup@ Thanks for your advice. Ya my yellow wrasse comes out once in a while. Re your advice to put one on the opposite end, will the wave cause a major swirl when the opposing current meets somewhere in between? I am thinking of putting one on the same side but aiming at an angle targeting the lower part of the tank. What do you think.

Hi BFG@ Thanks...I will only keep one wrasse and hopefully the 4 ft tank is big enough to provide some hiding spaces shd the yellow wrasse becomes a bully. I am mindful too that yellow wrasse can grow to quite a substantial size.

So far... i think Yellow Wrasse are relatively peaceful... it may grow fairly big though, about 4 inches? 6 line is the most aggressive one i had..

Reef finder.. I am not an expert but i read before that for waves/circulation, you need to aerate the top as well, as in near surface. So if you install something that can be directed, i will point it either upwards or downwards and shift the vortech accordingly.

i've read of tanks that have 2-3 vortechs at the centre and after one night the fishes were all gasping for air. surface movement is very important

Ketchup@ I hope my yellow wrasse can survive to that size.Keeping my fingers crossed.

Trevally@ my current Ecotech does that and it creates visually strong ripples at the surface of the water. I think I need one to target at the dead spots at the lower part of the tank
