Red Slime

Hi All,

My tank is infected with Red Slime. It already 1 month and still getting more. I bought Red Slime remover and dropped inside the tank immediately. Water changes is done weekly. There are no improvement at all. Does anyone know the reason why there are so many Red Slime? Pls advise me. Thank u all.

I did some research before, and usually, its due to the following reasons;

1> Nutrients

2> Lightings

3> Flow

Nutrients from your water tape (Water change), or dead fishes. Hence, most of the time, PO4 and NO3 will be high. If you experience high readings due to this, water change will do.

Lighting regime happened to be my problem recently. I had 18 hrs lighting regime. RED slime algae, bloomzzz. After reducing to 8hrs, the problem had subside greatly.

Flow is also another problem. Too little flow can result to that. CHeck your wavemaker position and adjust them to ensure good flow throughout the tank.

What water are you using for water change?

1) When u do your water change, pls use DI water. It'll help (a lot).

2) siphon out the red slime (not just the water) when u change water.

3) repeat this once a day or once every 2 days (as much as your back can take).

4) increase the flow in the tank (especially where the red slime is found)

I suffered from this for awhile, almost gave up. But the above did the magic for me, after about 2 weeks or so..

P/s: reducing photoperiod helps too (but I can't lower too much due to SPS)

I think the key is still the water.. get your water tested.. esp your RO/DI etc.. Maybe it's time to change the resin etc.

Hmmm lights alone may not work (unless you do a total black out for few days?) I've not tried before..
