Rust like phenomenon on LR

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

新年快乐 n Gong Xi Fa Cai! These few days, noticed a strange phenomenon that's in line with CNY! Noted my LRs becoming brownish orange, some wht like rust. Small green sprouts also seem to be growing frm the LRs. Has anyone experienced this?

Below are my water paramenter reading.

Salinity: 1.25

Amonia:0

NO3: 0

Ca: 355

Mg: 1,080

Ideally Ca shld be btw 400-450 and Mg btw 1250-1350. Is the low Ca and Mg the cause of this phenomenon?

Additionally noticed my yellow goby with injured mouth, not sure if it was attacked by the nuisance crab under the LR or fingus infection. Clown fish also has mouth injury which is non crab related. Sorry no pic as they're either swimming too fast or hiding under the rock. Is there any medication I can use? Can it be added directky to the tank? :ThanxSmiley:

I suppose it's new tank syndrome then. Currently I'm using distiller water and diamond energy water for top up and water change. Since the rock where the diatoms grow is close to the return pump and wave maker, I reckon nitrate, flow and silica shldn't be the cause. Only thing untested is Phospate. Shld I then get Zeozym to eradicate the prob or leave it to die off on it's own?

Diatoms will normally die off by itself... It is new tank syndrome..

my advise is to stop using diamond water. it doesn't filter out all phosphates and silicates present from your tap water so don't treat it to be as good as RO/DI water. the distilled water you're using is good enough on its own.

i'm not sure about zeozym but you can try GFO to remove your phosphates. there're many good brands out there like rowa or phosban. but this will only work if you stop using diamond water as top up

Ok got it thanks! Got some astrea snails today. Will monitor and see how it goes.

For new tank syndrome how long does it take for the diatoms to die off?

New tank syndrome is part and parcel of marine set-up. Diatoms will die-off once the available silicates are used up and the nutrients export and fixing reach a equilibrium.

Besides, diatoms, dinoflagelates and bryopsis will come and go during new tank syndrome.

Personally, I like to let the tank go through its natural course rather than using chemical to control them. ;)

dinoflagellates may not only appear during new tanks!

i'm battling them now.

zeozym seems to work..

but for diatoms, leave it. they are harmless and the eye sore is only temporary.

sorry to hijack the thread, im oso having cyano n dino(not sure, but likely) problem, it is contributing to all my white hair on my head...m i able to use zeozym for a non-zeovit system? photo period: mh 6 hrs, t5 7hrs

zeozym wrks for me.

soak it in seawater for 6-8 hours.

pour it in ur tank and off skimmer

Which means it's better to pre-mix the zeozym with seawater before pouring it in? Should it be poured into sump or main tank and how long shld the skimmer be offed?

May not be using it now, however would like to know where else zeozym can be found apart frm Reef D as the pasir ris fish farms don't seem to carry it. Thanks!
