Peculiar problem of detritus with vodka dosing

Hi friends,

Am having a 18 gal tank with 10 gal sump.Filteration is provided through Octopus NW-110 and cheato .Mainly having sun corals along with LPS and other zoanthids.

Some 4 months back I have started with vodka dosing.Went really slow with 0.1 ml to 25 gal system .Now it has increased all the way to 2 ml .But the nitrates are still at 10-20.

Also I am getting lots of detritus accumulating in the sump. Its like brown dust algae all over in my sump.It can be excess of bacteria also.

Can anyone let me know what is happening with my vodka dosing such that these detritus are building up in my sump...

you need patience with carbon dosing and it will not solve your problem within weeks or a few months. it is not a wonder solution that you need not attend to anything else. are you continuing to do water changes and manual/mechanical removal of waste/detritus? if not that probably explains the buildup. the dosing should only increase a bacteria count to convert your nirates and not cause more waste produced. what skimmer are you using?

having said that what dosing schedule are you following to from 0.1ml to 2ml in 4 months?

if your orginal dose at day 1 is 0.1ml, by day 4-7 it should be at 0.2ml. that concludes week 1.

week 2 would start at the dose +0.5ml regardless of aquaria volume thus in your case 0.7ml daily

by week 3 if nitrates are still constant/rising/not falling, then the dose would be 1.3ml daily.

week 4, same issue, dosage at 1.8ml daily.

and so on..

Thanks for the detailed reply.Well I am using a Reef Octopus NW-110 (not the cone model) skimmer for my 28 gal system.

As for the vodka dosing, well it was below 5 in the first month itself with 1.8 ml of vodka. So I was continueing to use the same dosage unil I started feeding heavily to revive two sun corals rescued from my friend's tank.

So now the nitrates are increasing as well the bacterial bloom.I had bacterial bloom previously also but it was not as much as it is now.

Also, I do 20% water change with siphoning but again it grows in a week.

Can you help me to point out where did I go wrong with my dosing?

Do I need to increase my vodka dosing ? Will supplementing it with MB-7 help in increasing the bacterial count?

I am planning to run Seachem Matrix Carbon in my sump as I donot run it.Do I need to use a reactor or just throw it in the sump.

Do you think that cabn contribute in reducing nitrates and phisphates?

Please help...........
