choice of live rock

Hi,

Just want to check which type of the following is better or are they equally good in terms of its **filtration function**?

1 acro skeleton, light, good for small fishes

2 appears more dense, more stone/rock like

3 flat type

not sure about eh filtration but i personally stay away from dense bulky rocks.

apart from that very very nice rocks! where are these from?

for filtration purposes, prob the flores island or the flat type is better.. Bigger surface area and more porous the rock is, the better... but honestly, most will just choose whichever that is best for scaping and sticking corals and look nice

For filtration the more porous the better. Guess in that sense it means lighter in weight when compared to another rock of the same size.

Get something that looks nice to put in display tank la, no point having something that so called serves the filtration purpose but absolutely hideous to look at. Hahaha.

Hmmm where u intend to use the rock? in the main tank as rock scape or in the sump for filtration function? If in the main tank then like what ketchup said "choose whichever that is best for scaping and sticking corals and look nice", if in the sump then u no need so big piece of rock, waste space and costly also. Just put a few kg of biohome into the sump for filtration function should be more then enough.

You can always make your own "pores" by drilling. Check out pegging method.

I set the criteria as we understand that the main purpose of live rocks/sands in marine tank is to support biological filtration.

I am just trying to understand why some (similar to type3) cost as much as $16/kg while type1 above are commonly found at local LFS at $4-6/kg. And those giant pieces are usually of type2 (typically $4-6/kg as well) and are usually nice and easy to scape.

Coral farm have good live rocks, but be really to pay more too!

Rougher/more porous/uglier rocks will give more surface area. Which in return will give more biological filtration.

I was in Pasir Ris yesterday and one of the shop is selling live rocks which the shop owner claimed is already "cured" and asking for $8 per kg.

My question here is are these rocks fully cured and i can use it as soon as i bring it home.

Pay for what you can afford for the liverocks. Price differ to how well the farms cured them. Go back you still need to go for cycling process and let the tank matured. Proper cycling and monitoring will give you a stable system and your liverocks will still work fine. There are many out there who has run great tanks without spending so high on liverocks/kg. Do some search on how to remove pest from liverocks before adding them in.

Just a suggestion ..I'm using 50% used live rock bought from pasar malam and 50% premium rocks from CF.

Some LFS say cured rocks but it's not... Get from reputation shops

For me I choose rocks with nice shape and light.... After that will sun dry the rocks for Weeks and wash throughly before putting to tank to cycle ...

Coral farm has good cured rocks !

Just went to LCK Coral Farm...now no stock on Live Rock....their LR is from Figi and $16/kg.....
