Irwana live rocks

Hello! Recently i went to irwana to see2 around since i'm still new to this hobby. At the back were huge pools and tubs full of liverocks. Just wana know whether those rocks are cured? I wanted to ask them there but somehow i could only find their bangla worker there at the moment. I dunno if he knows but i didn't ask him anyways. lol. Hope anyone who have bought live rocks from irwana would enlighten me. If so, care to explain where they are from?

It depends how you define "cured", generally local LFS do not do much to the LR once they are shipped in, these rocks will be externally cleaned to remove decaying matter and place in their holding tub awaiting buyers.

I do get some of my LRs from them and I must say the quality is acceptable, just choose those that have the least nuisance algae growth.

ya, most people choose liverock based on visual (to see any nuisance algae etc) and smell (whether it stinks! avoid!)

thanks for the feedback guys! i guess i will be going down one of these days to get some..anyways do the liverocks they sell come with pests such as small crabs or even worse bobbit worms? (i have read about them..sounds nasty)..haha just curious

You bet! These lrs come with lots of hitch hikers. Some boil them to get rid of them or if you still want them to be "live" (u paid so much for them), you can soak them in high salinity water so as to kill the hitch hikers. Good to soak them overnight with aeration.

wah boil it? wouldn't it kill every single thing on the rock including the bacterias? haha..anyways u mentioned soak in high salinity..this means dosing the seawater with lots of saltmix to make it super duper salty?

You may try adding a octopus during your final stages of cycling to catch pests.

Just make sure to remove it before adding your other lifestocks.

As for the octopus, either you donate it or return it to the LFS.

When measuring yr salinity, it shd be way up high on yr hydrometer or refractometer. Meaning, using a lot more of salt mix so you might want to get a cheap salt mix when cycling yr tank.

sounds like a good idea. So these crabs and pests will just crawl out and die? How long should i soak it? Will the beneficial bacteria on the rocks die too due to the high salinity?

haha..can't belive it man..that crab should have been turned to crabmeat..anyways u boiled all your live rocks?

One simple method I use is to hose the newly acquired rocks in the loo and wait. Soon u'll see worms crawling out not to mention small hairy crabs. One just use a pair of tweezers to remove them! It has been my observation that during low tide, the rocks r exposed n Mother Nature unleashes her fury be it bright sunlight or heavy downpour. Despite the hourly exposure, life continues to thrive. So, after the shower, I place the rocks into the tank n the algae n small sps r none the worse. Next the skimmer goes into operation. BTW I use artificial sw with the proper S.G. and ph.
