What are you using ? I think tunze nano or koralia nano should be enough

If your wavemaker is behaving in the reverse mode, then you have to be careful as it it drawng water INTO the pump instead of pushing water out of the pump to create wave. Try either on off repeatedly to get the wavemaker into the right mode, or you can place your palm infront of the wavemaker and cover the outlet for a short while, once you notice the water is pushing out from the wavemaker, release your palm and it shd work properly.
