Is it a good idea to have a sump?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I will like to have a sump tank, My display tank is 2 ft by 1ft by 1.5ft height.

My available space for sump is at the side which is 30cm x 20cm, as below my display is my daughter hermit crab :heh:

therefore the only place is beside my display tank cabinet.

I was thinking of getting a overflow box and a sump, is this beneficial greatly to my reef tank?

If that is the case, thinking of setting a small sump tank with acrylic sheet as they dun customise such a small tank do they? 1ft by 20cm?

How is the partition of sump it should be? 2 compartment?

Thanks for all your advise

Definitely it's good to have a sump if your situation allows u to.

There r many advantages to 1 disadvantage that is occupied space.

Easy to maintain (cleaning, changing filter stuff etc)

More water is involve despite having small tank.

Filter system space doesn't eat into your main tank thus allow u to keep more fishes as there's more space.

Better filtration system.

Cooler in water temperature due to there's water flow.

Thanks will custom make a 1 ft tank any recommendation? And overflow box? And return pump and design?

Be extra careful with overflow box. If siphon breaks for any reason, you'll get flooding.

You mentioned "My available space for sump is at the side which is 30cm x 20cm".

The sump needs to be sitting lower than your display tank for the siphon to work. Meaning the piping after the overflow box should be sending water DOWNWARDS to your sump. You'll need to get the measurement right 1st before you start.

While searching the forum on "tunze overflow", I came across this thread which may interest you.

If properly done, it should have an overall positive effect on your livestock, but do take into account of time, effort, $$, & aesthetics factors. It works out differently for every reefer.

Another question I will like to put refugim is it necessary to put live sand in sump? Following the design of this link

http://www.melevsreef.com/sump.html

There's not much room in a 1 foot sump which you're planning to have. I don't think putting sand in there is going to help much.
