snails and shrimps to live in bare tank setup?

Recommended Posts

I have a very bare tank setup. No sand bead, planning 2 - 4 fishes, No corals, planning one or two live rocks. I do not like to have heavy maintenence :P .

Question is, am I able to keep snails and shrimps? I believe for shrimps, they get threatened very easily. Without rocks to hide in, will they be able to survive the stress? of course considering that no fish attacks them.

Snails, I'm not very sure. What the hell do they eat? Bacterial? .. I had FW snails before, they don't seem to need feeding. Is it the same with SW snails? To add, my tank's position will probably not encourage algae growth (only FL and no sunlight).

Any expert advise? :look:

Make sure the LR you get is cured if not toxic ammonia and nitrite will build up and kill ur fishes. Yes Shrimps and snails can be kept. Just give the shrimps enough space to hide and seek refuge. get more LR. It looks good anyway. Snails feed on algae. and need no feeding. They are part of the clean up crew in the tank. Usually people don't keep them because they want to, They do because they need to. as for the snail feedings, if there are no algae, depending on the species, you might be able to sustain it on vegetables thrown into the tank. I suggest you get some sand. Better for LR to hold(wouldn't slip as glass too smooth, thus can't get nice positioning) and looks better too. Get scarlet cleaner shrimp as they are small, hardy easy to manage and are relatively bold. Even walk up your hand and pick dead skin off it. They are easy to feed too. Just mkae sure you do not have any Livestock in your tank while it's cycling.

If you want nudibranchs..wait for lettuce nudibranchs to be available for sale again...keep an eye on the weekly report...normally ppl will update stocks there.

saw a few nice ones at LFS but after going through reports here and advise from LFS owners, I decided to leave it aside.. Dun seem to be easy to keep and they are toxic when dead..

Lettuce nudibranchs are actually one of the easiest nudibranchs to keep. They eat nuisance hair algae. Quite harmless if they die in ur tank if you ask me..

Anyway..mine died coz got sucked into surface skimmer..oh well...sh*t happens...

I don't think the ones you saw are lettuce nudibranchs..not many ppl bring them in except places like PR.

Always something more important than fish.
