Guest
If all you know about a Reef tank is only LPS,SPS,FOWLR or a Mixed reef tank, take a closer look again on the non-photosynthetic reef tank !! This is an interesting concept that has only been achievable and gaining interest in the last several years due to the advance of the equipments, supplements and knowledge . The non-photosynthetic corals, as their name suggests, do not obtain their primary nutrition from sunlight. These deeper water corals instead rely on suspended particles and tiny organisms for food unlike other types of SPS or LPS corals. The non-photosynthetic reefs require multiple feedings per day and tend to stay high in excess nutrients like phosphates and nitrates. But the the gorgeous and not-so-common corals found in these tanks makes all of the effort worth while. With correct knowledge , equipments and setup this once seem impossible setup is no longer impossible !
Guest
Some photos borrow from Reefkeeping Sept 2010 TOTM which featured a sucessful NPS setup. More information of this setup can be found here .
