Help on coral

Recommended Posts

hi,

Thanks for the help for all those bros and sister in this forum, I find that this forum is very helpful as I just started reefing about a month ago, and learn a lot in this forum, now my tank is running fine, only recently I have a problem.

I do my weekly test for water and realise my water nitrate went abit up so I do a Water change . After which I find one of my coral also my very first coral which I have behave strangley. The day before the WC i have add a strawberry tree coral I suppose. Then this coral which I not sure about the name seem not to open and remain very unactive. If can help ID this coral for me

coralz.jpg

Please advise. There is two the same species as shown here

coraltank.jpg

the other coral which is below is find and active.

What actually is happening ?

Secondly , on the same day my left hand leather refuse to open also and form a white slimy film like tingy on the surface, i clean it off and put back to tank. What is that?

Thanks

Perhaps you can start by checking all the other water parameter if they are OK ? i.e; PH and ammonia which play an important part in the overall health of your system as well.

From the photo i can see that you are running a cannister filter, and hope you have completed the tank cycling process prior to adding fish / corals. The white slimy thing which you saw from the corals is due mainly to coral being stress. Reason behind it maybe due to recent drastic changes in water parameter ,lighting or water temperature especially for newly added corals into tank.

If you have done all the check on your water parameter, the corals should recover soon.

Hope this help and Happy reefing..

Your PH is too low, you can use a PH buffer to try to adjust it back to 8.3 , and your salinity is too high , you can try removing some of your water inside the tank and replacing it with RO/DI ( Treated) fresh water to lower it.

Help, can help me adjust the water parameter back? How to? I jus did a water change last night the water parameter read as

Nitrate : 40

Ph : 7.8

Nitrate : 0.5

Ammonia : 0

Salinity : 1.025

Nitrite : 0.5ppm ?

Nitrate : 40ppm ?

Nitrite 0.5ppm properly young age of yr tank... let the tank cycle longer.... and bring it down <0.1ppm...

Don't add further livestock till your tank stable... And blue sponge is not easy especially new tank...

Cheers and Happy Reefing..

Fyi, a cycled tank Nitrite and Ammonia should be close to 0 ppm...

Thanks, FYI the nitrate n ammonia is zero for 1 week after I add market prawn a month ago, then I start to add slowly the life stock, tink I found the culprit is the new strawberry coral tree, think is dying n give off a foul smell after I take it out, 30 min later the rest of coral seem to come to life, thank will do a water check tmw

leather is normal to slimy.

the stwarberry tree corals seems to be a goniopora family to me.

who told u its stawberry tree? stawberry dont have tree anyway. haha

ok jokes aside.

please buff your parameters as recommended by our fellow reefers but do it slowly.

not withint afew days shot up to 8.3

How to bring down the nitrite? My shrimp pass away last nite, should I do a WC after my shrimp die? And I nt sure my leather coral can make it, will it effect my water parameter after I do a WC second time which was 2 day ago? Or jus leave the coral during the WC , but I am scare after do a WC , n coral die will affect the parameter again , as I hve been buying distill water in carton. Thank for advise

WC should be able to bring your nitrite down and replenish the trace elements.

WC will be good

maybe 30-50% water cahnge

check your water quality before water change

make sure ur new water prepared have 0 no3 and 0 no2

call this guy 91051231

he sells distill water cheaper in 4+ to 5+ per 19L bottle.

ask him the difference in quality.

after doing water change leave the tank alone for weeks.

dose bacteria sparingly. do not overdose.

So during WC I jus leave the unsure status of coral in tank or do I nid to take it out ? Unsure is I cannot tell weather is it alive or going to die. Thanks will try save them by tonite if possible and what is the optimal salinity since 1.025 is too high? Thanks

Seems like a very basic setup... Do you have a chiller... The Gonio is not doing well is mainly due to the temp if you dun have chiller, started out like that for me 7 years back.. If you have a chiller then it might be due to something else and Gonio are not easy to keep to start with... Anyway, it is normal for leather to remain closed and slimy, it is going through the shedding mode.. It will happen every 1-2 months and can last anywhere from a few day to months... Cause of it still unknown to me..

i was told that leathers do that to remove detrius and sand particles.

another saying is that those slims are toxic to some corals and they use these slims to kill neighbouring corals to take over their space.

LOL
