Wireless router in home use

Hi I just installed my compex kit, all autoconfig, cuz I"m an idiot at wireless setup. but need to ask how do you secure the wireless network? prevent others from leaching off my broadband?

You many enable your SSID and configure the WEP key for your wireless network.

SSID and WEP access...but I thought you must set something like "allow only assigned MAC users to log on" or something like that. not sure if its MAC

thats what I have to do with my Maxonline 3000 wireless modem lah. not sure about normal wireless router.

i thk WEP is for secure data transfer between your router and the wireless card. To prevent others from access your connection you have to set the option "Allow only the MAC address(provide the mac address of your wireless card)" as specified by terry.

yea..strong SSID & long WEP key

if possible..try to reduce the frequency(or whatever) so that ur AP is assessible only within ur home..not sure how that is done..im still on 10baseT

well using wep key and adding only allow which MAC add to access this router will do.. it's the safe enough..

cause every network card got a unique MAC add...

dont need to reduce the frequency....

Fwah so cheem!! the SSID thing I tried before but gave up. I tried to start a new one, but when I refreshed, the wireless card only detects a network that is secureless, donno how to make THAT one secured. hhmm so SSID and WEP is enuff? ok will try and figure it out again. thanx guys!

You have to configure the WEP on the router and you wireless LAN card. For SSID, some wil disable broadcasting it to prevent others from detecting it but I just dun bother.

How do you find out this MAC no.? and how do you configure the router when its wireless and not connected in any way to the PC? (I know it sounds stupid! heh...) I mean I can't "send" over info to configure the router rite?

if u using winxp..

just click start->all programs->accessories->system tools->system information and look for network->adapter

if u r using win98 then go to run and type this winipcfg

MAC address?

WinXP.

go to Run

type in CMD

then type ipconfig/all

you'll get your IP address for every thing. get the physical address of the wireless card you are using. that will be your MAC address if I'm not wrong. or at least thats what I did with mine. (=

Dear all, I have installed WEP, and got it working.... BUT donno why after I reboot my router now got big big prob! I can't seem to have connection to the broadband modem connected to the router! only ip address given is 169.XXXXXX which is if I"m not wrong the adaptor itself, previously there were 192.###### IP given. any idea how to go about it?

it means the DHCP server ur wireless router is running is not providing ur client PC with the IP...something wrong with hte config? read the manual on manually configuring IP

uh-oh. 169 means no IP captured. and how come you still can come online?

yeah when I tired ipconfig/renew the error msg was unable to contact dchp server. so what does it mean? I have wireless connection, so that means my usb adaptor is connected to router? but just that ip address given is wrong (169)? what does dchp server have to do with it since there is communication btwn the router and adaptor?

wat have u done to the config?

maybe becoz of that MAC address restriction thingy?

169 it not wrong IP..but an IP automatically assigned by ur Winnt machine for peer to peer communication with other winnt machine..winnt does that when it fails to get dhcp reply

arrrr.. finally managed to get it up. seems its an easy problem, my WEP setting after being setup, didn't allow my adaptor to connect to router. hence afterwhich it took 169 as IP. the reason?? cuz the router setup allows you to set 4 keys for WEP, numbering 0-3. BUT the windows XP allows you to set WEP on adaptor side with keys numbering 1-4!!!!! I tried matching no.s like key #2 or #1 on both sides but still cannot connect. finally simply left it as 0 on router and never dabble with key # on pc side,and it finally worked!
