Tank kick off

Recommended Posts

Guys,

Been thinking to kick off a new setup, hence needing help and guidance to do so.

As for kick start and cycling period, which one do i need during the period?

1. Pump ( Yes right? )

2. Wavemaker ( Yes right? )

3. Skimmer

4. Reactors - PO4, Calcium etc.

5. Chiller

6. Lighting

7. Anything else ( please suggest )

As i had been reading through the forum, some suggested to throw in "market prawn" as it is beneficial for the bacterias. Any other suggestion?

Also, what kind of monitoring do i need to do. ( NO2,NH4 etc)

I'm looking to set up a 3 X 2 X 1.5 tank with soft corals and fishes.

oh ok..guess i would like to give it a try on mp..

anyone can help me regarding the basic equipment needed in cycling?

Below are the basic you need during cycling:

Tank

Biological filter media (Biohome/ liverock/ livesand) - purpose of cycling is to build up the biological filter agents in these media so they need to be in during the cycle.

wavemaker/powerhead - for water movement.

salt water - natural sea water or prepared from aquarium salt. (not table salt)

test kits for Ammonia (NH3,NH4), Nitrite (NO2), Nitrate (NO3) - for checking the progress of your cycle.

This hobby requires lots of research and tons of patience. Read up. I've provided some useful links below. You can also approach any member of the Marine Aquarist Society of Singapore (MASS) whom can guide you through a more eco-friendly way of pursuing this wonderful hobby. MASS has a sub forum on this site. Good Luck.
