Get a good salt mix I reccomend "marine environment dual phase formula" do regular w/c of 10 - 15% every week. this should replenish lost nutrients and take away toxins from water. do this regularly and u shouldn't need to use other chemicals

hi.....i am wondering if that if i change a little amount of water everyday(one scoop of a regular size fetcher)... will it totally warrant me not to use any chemicals ???

No chemicals? As in supplements? Not on the long run.

Calcium and carbonate will slowly be depleted.

If your tank uses 10 ppm of calcium everyday and your salt mix gives you 400 ppm each time.

Day 0: 390 * 90% + 400 * 10% = 351 + 40 = 391 ppm Ca in tank

Day 1: 381 * 90% + 400 * 10% = 343 + 40 = 383 ppm

Day 2: 373 * 90% + 400 * 10% = 336 + 40 = 376 ppm

So on and so forth. As you can see it is impossible to maintain the level of subtance in the water simply by water change. You must top up with additives.

I would suggest the best method would be using a test kits..

Or if there arent much demanding coral dosing kalk maybe mostly enough ;)

Not forgetting ur regular water changes..

I agree that some elements will be depleting. But if your tank is not too demanding on those elements w/c should do the trick. Unless your like me. I have a LPS tank and it takes away 60ppm of Calcium everyday. So I have to dose kalk regularly. get test kits and test levels when appropriate.

60 ppm = 60 mg/L of Ca2+

Assuming you have a 3' tank that has about 150L of water.

That means your tank consumes 9000 mg or 9 g of Ca2+ ions per day.

Which translate to be about 22.5 g of pure calcium carbonate per day and 8.21kg per year.

or

12.8g of kalkwasser powder per day which is about 9 tubs of Reefez kalkwasser per year.

WoW! And I'll say it backwards. WoW.

u would be the first to come up with such cool calculation for CA intake !!! cool ~

my fox doubled it's size in a month.(now diameter: 15cm) brain, goniopora, torch, frogspawn, hammer and plerogyra grown considerably much too.

60ppm per day = max! usually abt 35

Interesting.....

Are you also saying that the skeleton size of your corals also increasing......especially the fox as you state that it has double its size within a month

Even halving the ca intake still means your ca reactor eats 4kg of media a year. That is still very wow.

Holy Cow-Wow ... 60ppm

Guess I'll have to forgo my dream of owning a Fox coral as well. It doubling its size in a month will rob me of my other dream coral, a Leather.

Man, on second thoughts, I think I better convert my LPS tank to a FO, maybe no Live Rock, else the Coralline will worl into a scroll and pop out of water.
