Feeding Marine Snow or DT...switch off PS???

While feeding your corals with DT or Marine Snow...do you guys switch off your pump for your sump and protein skimmer??

I do..... cos i heard if DT gets into the canister, it will have algae growth...., cos i'm using a cannister.

it will be advisable to switch it off....cos skimmers tend to remove them....read it somewhere in RC b4

DT is live plankton, unlike dissolved organics or proteins which easily stick to the surface tension grabbing action surfaces of foam bubbles, are not easily 'captured' unless the foaming action is tremendous.

There is no reason to be unduly worried about all the plankton being skimmed out.

Care to explain in detail what you mean? Phytoplankton and the algae that grows in the tank are different species of algae.

Anyway...thanks for your advise. I am just paranoid about all my corals while feeding them...

By the way I was at Kinokuniya and was reading a magazine about foods for clam.....they actually recommend to feed a mixture of both DT & Marine Snow to enhance the color and health of the clam....I was suspecting does this applied to those fliter feeding corals..??

The article actually commented DT is sort meat and Marine Snow is vege for this marine live?!!

Just something I read to share with you guys....how true??

would say always take mag articles with a pitch of salt.

reefcentral is a good avenue to size up a product.

every product is heavily scrutinised. though there is

a chance of propanganda at work. my take is believe

in visual result. put dt & MS under scope and you will

see why.

the meat = zooplankton (maybe MS has. ? not really a MS user)

variety is the word in feeding. for clams, its the strains/sizes, not the form

that is important.

I run my skimmer 12hrs daily(7-7). only dose DT at night when

PS is off. but i reckon the difference is marginal. HTH

DT is "live", not suppose to induce any negative effects..

it will "float" around till consume.

The things that will grow in the canister is not algae .

(there is no light and algae are plants that need light...even cyano)

You will find tunicates,tiny sea squirts and maybe sponges growing there.(mainly filter feeders)

when u wash the canister- just scrub them out. Only a few will grow.

Doesn't matter what liquid food u feed in this case- if u have them growing on LR,they will grow in the canister too.

won't affect the flowrate much.

DT is so small that it will go thru your filter (unless u run a micron filter) - so even if u off it while feeding its still going to get into the filter when u switch it on.

phyto= plant

Magic word = food size

The real ocean marine snow is made up of particulate and dead matter -detrius,bacteria,mucus,dead phyto,zoo,fish scales etc etc. its a soup that rains down to the deeper depths of the sea.

The bottle marine snow is mainly deionized Water, phytoplankton, (Nannochloropsis, Tetraselmis, Isochrysis, Spirulina, Schyzochitruim), dried seaweed meal, zooplankton, fish oil, citric acid.

Although it is a dead food stored on shelfs at room temperature, anything with a little phyto material in it is better than yeast based foods.

Filter feeding corals is very generic - many have different needs and food size. You can't get a hamster to swallow a watermelon.

err... that guy says, off it for 1/2 hour wor.... he say by then most of it had been consumed by the corals...
