me, it surely helps but till a certain extend only.

If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

Hi Guys,

Did any one of you ever used UV Strilizer for paraside prevention or does it help?

Thank you for your advise and suggestion!

I am always a supporter of UV... Just bought a 55w UV... There is no outbreak of ich since I added it..

over kill lol.

anyway, the smaller the water volume, the more helpful UV is. Bigger water volume means more water have to pass through UV to kill parasite. in very huge tanks, people more often than not run more than 1 unit simultaneously. Think of it this way. (scenario exaggerated to prove a point). it's more useful to run 10 units of 36W UV than a single unit of 100W UV. the amount of water passing through so many (10), units of UV is much better than passing through one 100W UV. increasing the wattage isn't going to kill the parasites any faster. parasites die in 36W, 55W and 100W all the same speed. just like if i shoot you in the head with a shotgun, machinegun or a bazooka. you don't die faster from each of those. you die at the same speed right?

also depends on what fish you keep. in a tank full of hardy fish like fairy wrasse, damsels, anthias and/or other bullet proof fish, the reliability of the UV system is questionable since these fishes are so disease resistant, that the effect of UV is almost, if not, same, to a system without UV.

Testing UV out in a tank with very disease prone fish like tangs, angels and butterflies will see more results on wether or not the UV is working or not.

Also if your tank is already on the verge of crashing due to disease outbreak, installing a UV there and then probably won't be of much use. UV is good for preventing disease from reaching catastrophic levels, but is useless if the disease has already progressed to that stage.

As for wether i am a believer in UV, yes i am. a firm believer at that. But UV is not as magical as everyone makes it out to be, and will not catch you every single time you fall. Just because you have a UV, does not mean you can be very liberal and throw in 5 tangs, 5 angels, 6 butterflies at one go and think that you will get away with disease outbreak.

Slowly stocking your fish is important so as not to increase parasite load so quickly that UV cannot cope. you need to work with the UV, not against it

4) how long have to change the PL light, after installed need to run for how long before adding live stocks and

5) the volume of water able to support?

6) Need what pump and flow rate?

I agree, it will not help much if your tank is already infested with ich.. It will only reduce the amount of ich that are free swimming in your tank...

If your tank is matured and yet the fishes you added still get ich, It is advisable to let the UV run for 1 month before adding new fishes to let the ich finish its cycle and hopefully, during the free swimming stage, some will get killed by the UV when they pass thru the UV...

It will kill good bacterias too... But I dun think all... Bacteria reproduce faster than you think..

I usually put it up for 24/7 hours...

I only turn on one hour everyday...because i'm using an exposed type....

Tank : 3 x 2 x 1.8 ( setup end Feb 2014 ) --> 4 x 2 x 1.8 ( setup early Nov 2016 )
Skimmer : Bubble Magus NAC6 --> Bubble Magus Curve 7
Return pump : Jebao 10000l/h ( down in 17th December 2014 ) --> Jebao DC-12000 ( 19th December 2014 )
Compressor drop-in coil
Wavemaker : Tunze 6105 x 1
Lights : Modular based DIY LED light x 4

killing good bacteria is an urban legend and you have nothing to worry about.....

bacteria is mainly found living in the rocks. only a small population exist in the water. the amount you kill in the water is negligible as there are 100000x more living inside the rock, sand, filter media etc etc etc.

With the UV on, fish are less prune to sick....

i think we all understand that by now...... and your reply does not have any link to what you quoted me on. <_<

UV kills microorganisms that pass through it.... including bacteria, and other parasites (white spots, velvet etc..)

what i'm trying to say is you can turn on the UV 24/7 because the amount of bacteria it kills is negligible. there are far more living in the rocks and whatever the UV kills is not going to have any negative effect.

how abt the coral.. heard having the UV on 24x7 will affect the coral health...

in what way?

these are just nonsense that don't make sense at all.

if anything, running a UV system will improve coral health. UV will to a certain extent, remove organics in the water much like carbon would.

UV light and UV steriliser is two completely different thing.

UV lights are bulbs that produce UV rays. these rays are extremely dangerous to humans and long term exposure will cause skin cancer among other things... but UV light is very helpful in surface sterilisation, and many hospitals use UV to sterilise surgical appliance.

UV sterilisers are UV bulbs that are hiddin inside a protective casing so you don't get exposed to the light. water pass through the unit and the light will shine into the water and kill microorganisms.
