New Tank 48" x 30" x 20"

Playing with Google Sketchup, came up with some new tank ideas.

1. Tank with corner overflow

2. Tank with 2 corner overflows

Kinda like the 2nd one as I'm thinking of trying to hide the return pipings, wavemakers, wavebox, etc. in the centre between the 2 overflows.

What you think, Bros & Sis??

New Tank. Most likely moving end of the year. Hope to build it and start cycling before we move in....

Will be re-using most of the old equipment. When the tank is ready, will transfer as much of my existing stuff over as well.

What about center overflow? You have a lot of space for live rock structure on the left and right side. A 2.5ft to 3ft wide tank is nice.

Why don't you consider having an external overflow box instead? Enables more room for precious "real estate".

Wasn't thinking of center overflow, b'cos I was thinking of being able to see thru the tank from the side (if u know what I'm trying to say), using the 2 overflows to hide the pipings n wavemakers.

As for external overflow, I've never been comfortable with the thot of the overflow box hanging on the side of the tank, esp now it's in the house.

Initially, I was thinking a 4.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 tank, with a side overflow.

With the overflow is the middle, on the side, instead of a full side, so that the piping n wavemakers position there, and will be covered up by cabinet door.

But that means we'll have only 2 views of the tank, and the side view won't be good to look at anyways.

Which is why I'm leaning towards the 2nd design. Maybe can play with foam scaping as well.....

why not do a full scale overflow at the back? then your personally wont think it that dangerous anymore and your wavemaker, piping all those can just drills some hole and put them in.

in that case, your display tank will still be a true 4x2x2 and will be quite free of equipment

Hmm... Don't u think a 4ft overflow is a bit too big?

By the time pipings and wavemakers go in, the tank will be a 2ft width rather than a 2.5ft width, if I go with the 2 overflows.

Think the hard part is the scaping to hide the stuff. Saw some really cool scapes they've done at RC with the foam thingy. But they seems to be pretty permanent, so how to remove wavemakers for cleaning, etc...?

Just realised, the euro-bracing might be in the way of getting the wavebox out if I scape around it. Maybe have to go back to the initial design where there's less bracing to deal with. Also, less glass to clean. ;p

At the same time, I can have all the pipings on one side of the sump. Modified Bro Lemon's sump design a bit, made it bigger, thinking of a 4x2, so I fit all the equipment in.

Not cheap leh... more than US$100 for a piece, and if I didn't read wrongly, only 2000L/hr. Which means will need quite a few of them.

Don't have so much budget for the tank, since need to furnish the apt as well....

when we planned lemon's sump tank the headache part was that it have to be access from the top and not the side unless the interior cabinet height is on the tall side.

water level is 1 key point to watch out for your sumptank level. next will be your eqpts inthere that will be affected greatly by water level. e.g skimmer.

u need to also consider that when you off your return pumps the water level in the display compartment will not be sufficient to allow fishes/livestock to escape.

Thanks for the tips. The only piece of equipment that will be affected by water level is the skimmer, the others should be ok. Will add another piece of glass to prevent fish from escaping.

Cabinet height is one which I'm finding hard to decide at the moment. If I go for the usual 3ft ht, the tank is not at eye level and I will probably have trouble removing the skimmer for cleaning or maintenance.

But with a taller cabinet, accessing the tank will be tiring.... But visually, should be nice to look at since it will be at eye level, and there's plenty room in the sump.

Don't think I'll have the luxury of having the sump tank on the side. So it's likely that we'll go for a taller cabinet. Oh well, at least I guess I won't be tempted to mess with the tank as often as I used to.

Also, 2 overflow for 30 pipe is too big? Or just go for the usual 25 pipe?
