Yellowtail Pgymy angel (flavicauda) and flame angel/flame back

Recommended Posts

I have a flavicauda angel and am very keen to introduce a flame angel or a flameback. However, I have some misgivings about keeping both of these pygmies together.

I tried that a few mths ago and the much smaller flavicauda chases the flame around sometimes and eventually the flame developed at sore at the gills and subsequently perished, I can't be sure that the flavicauda killed it.

What are the experiences of the other reefers?

Keep the new fish in a betta box till they get use to each other. Give them about 2 weeks. Then release the new fish once the lights are off, as this will reduce stress and also give the new fish a place to find a hiding spot

I only try b4 below combo

Flame angel Vs Flame angel = Very difficult (Fight til died), even I keep in betta more than 2 month also fail to get along... So better get in pair rather than try them... I try more than 5xtime... end up.. need to get ready pair one...

Flame angel Vs Flame Back = No problem (Just fight initially after that ok)

I never try flavicauda b4.. but I feel long run.. still flame angel fiercer... this fella can challenge big tang like purple/yellow or even PBT without mercy.... Therefore, we should let the weaker enter in tank first... Just my opinion.... :)

Cheers and Happy Reefing....

Thanks. The tank is a 24G nano, hence with the limited space constraints, I think it is better to just continue to keep the flavicauda first. It is surprisingly aggressive, very small, cute looking but behave like monsters.

pairing flame angels are easy. they are one of the very few sexually dichromatic (males and females have different colours/patterns) and dimorphic (males and females are of different size) pygmy angels.

female flame angels have more rounded dorsal and ana| fins, and the blue margin on the fins is reduced. males have more pointed fins and much more blue.

compare the two photos.

Female also has a more triangular rounder shape body, will post the pic soon, scanner down.
