SRC Member vagabond Posted December 20, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted December 20, 2003 Hi Reefers, I would like to know how to build an effective DSB? I understand that we need at least 4" and above of sand to consider deep. But, do we use different grades of sand and gradually build up to the depth or just one grade will do? Which grade is consider recommended for use? Do we lay anything like mesh between layers? Does DSB require maintenance? Please kindly advice. Cheers! Garlic
Grade 0 sand is very fine. You will have to put two layers of mesh to prevent grade 0 from sipping into the bottom layer. I use two layers and it is very successful.

SRC Member ervine Posted December 21, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted December 21, 2003 Anyone know how to calculate how much sand to get?
SRC Member vagabond Posted December 21, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 21, 2003 70% Grade 0 and 30% Grade 1. Is it true to have the coarse ones at the lower layer? Is it okay just to have all Grade 0 or Grade 1?
SRC Member Yellowbelly Posted December 21, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted December 21, 2003 I actually recycle my 2ft tank sand grade 1 and addinto my sump and then I another 2inch of Grade 0 sand on top making it four inch with no sseperation or anything. Now I am wondering whether can I put my damsel inside there
terryansimon
my DSB is full Grade 0. I think the bottom layer is Grade 0 and top layer is Grade 1 if you observe the 70/30 ratio.
terryansimon
DSB thickness calculator go to the above website and calculate thickness. then go down to Petmart and get a rough figure from them. thats what I did lah. hehz. (= and they were quite spot on. although one of them said 20 bags and I nearly slaughtered him.
SRC Member vagabond Posted December 21, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 21, 2003 was at LFS, i was told by them 50% grade 15 and 50% grade 1. they clam that this combination will be good for maintenance of DSB in future? is it true? btw, did you guys do maintenance on your DSB? if so, how long interval and how to? HwdQ
What kind of netting would you all recommend? Tks
SRC Member jsoon Posted December 21, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted December 21, 2003 70% Grade 0 and 30% Grade 1. Is it true to have the coarse ones at the lower layer? Is it okay just to have all Grade 0 or Grade 1? After a while, Gravity will do its job - the fine grain sand will sink as it compacts below the coarse grain.... lightningstrike
juz dump 4 to 6 inches of grade 0 sand into ur main tank or alternatively into ur sump tank. but make sure the volume of ur sump can support ur main tank.
