what size pump to use?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I've got a 2ft cube and a chiller... i intend to use only 1 return pump from the sump to the chiller back into the tank...

Current setup, i've got a ehiem 1250 (from sump to chiller back to sump) and a 1262 (from sump to tank)

is it better to reduce 1 pump and getting a more powerful one to do both jobs? if recommended, what size should i use? 4000 L/H?

many thanks!

A agree with the above.

Pump that flow thru chiller will lost pressure so the water in tank will have dead spot which is no good for the fishes.

Must ensure all part of water in tank has good water circulation.

Some1 doesn't 1 2 do anything find an excuse,some1 1 2 do something find a mean!

Don't see the link between head loss and having dead spot in the tank. Tt's why we have wavemakers to ensure water circulation is good.

2 pumps are better as a fail safe in case 1 breaks down. It also gives you more gentle return flow by splitting into 2 returns rather than creating a tsunami with 1 powerful pump.

Hi Phangster,

I am with their opinions of using 2 even though cost and water temp can be higher.

If you connect using only 1 pump, then you would need to match the flowrate of the chiller and the flowrate of the return to tank pipe.

Think it will hard to compromise on these 2 flowrate.

Eqpt: Deltec MCE 600, Tunze 6055 with Tunze 7091 controller, Artica 1/15 HP chiller, AquaIllumination Sol Blue LED Light System

Ya. 2 is always better than 1.

Chiller also in your list Liao I believe another pump wun kill much in term of electric bill

moreover every1 knows marine tank set up n maintainance dun come cheap.

I'm using arctica chiller 1/5 HP with flowrate of up to 4800l/h... Maybe get a ehiem with 4000+ flow... I'm trying to minimise the heat produced by the pumps and also tidy up the wires... Well if it's not recommended, then better not la! :)

Heat produce by ehiem pump I would say not much so dun need worry.

Most important dun place your chiller in cabinet even thou there's enough space.(I know it looks nice n tidy)

Current configuration is ok. For the 1262 you might want to link up to 1" piping as return, so you do not restrict the pump. You will get a lot more flow, as opposed to using 1/2" piping for return. You should get a separate wavemaker in your tank like a vortech or tunze. In case your return pump fails (quite unlikely for Eheim but just in case), your tank will still have circulation and you won't end up losing everything.

Always something more important than fish.
