Recommended Posts

Hi,

after 1 year in the hobby, i have now a 500+ litres main tank running and waiting to receive live stocks of my old tank. however, i am using my existing 3 ft old sump with all the bio balls and rings, live rocks, live sands from my old 200+ litres main tank. can i safely transfer the fishes and corals over?

Thks in advance for any advice and guidance.

If you are putting in the old sand, live rocks and bio balls from your old tank into your current sump, it should not be an issue.

My Setup:

Chiller Pump: Sicce 4000

Return Pump: OR3500

FR Pump: Atman AT-104

Tubby ATO, Kalkweisser Reactor with magnetic stirrer.

Hi livloyalist,

1+ on what Peter said. Using some of the old water may help too...

But you must make sure you have not allowed any die off in the live rock and filter media during the transfer. i.e no drying out, no stale water for hours, no extended freshwater soak etc..

When I migrated from my old to new tank, i actually got new live rocks and new media and went through a couple of weeks of cycling and introduced my fish without problems.

I wanted to reuse some of my old media so i transfered them to the new sump as well.

However, I made the mistake of keeping my old filter media in a pail of water without flow or pumped air for hours. Hours after I introduced the filter media, I found all my fish in hiding and near death. In the end, i was very fortunate to have only one death after I rescued all survivors and put them back into the old/quarantine tank. I believe the old media experienced die off and release some toxins into my tank....

Thks Kanegan for sharing. I received the same advice from reefcrazy when i took over his tank. I remembered to pump air in the sumnp tank with the old bio ring and ball. Only started with a wear off pump that put little air but changed it already.

Appreciate u guys sharing with me the infomation, otherwise in for a good shock.

You may need to wash sand as over the time it's can accumulate toxic underlayer specially if it from DSB. By you can reserved some top layer to seed it later.

Tank Spec :

Display tank : 48" x 24" x 18."'(H)

Sump tank : 25" x 23" x 18"(H)

Return pump : Reef Octopus 8000

Wave Maker : Vortech MP10Wes

Lighting : DIY LED (Cree led) 60 bulb

Chiller : helia 55hs

Skimmer : BM Curve 7

Controller : Reef Angel

Thks new new and steven for the advice. Do not know this.

I would suggest using new sand instead. Safer and cleaner that way. Need not use live sand, can use the normal cheaper sand.
