SRC Member comycus Posted April 27, 2010 SRC Member Share Posted April 27, 2010 Need some help with building a custom overflow box for my tank... Attached the following pic from melevsreef' website. I think majority of overflow boxes are designed in this way. The problem is that my tank has bracing all round, which means that the area where the box 'sits' on my tank, which is marked in the picture with a length of 1", needs to be extended to approximately 4". I'm no physics student, would anyone care to venture if extending this portion would affect the operation of the overflow? Some question marks would be how it performs after a siphon break, and whether it would affect the flowrate? Thanks! Quote My old 3ft

gp2700
I think Ian of I~Aquatics might be able to do a customized version to your needs. http://www.iaquatic.com/contact.htm
SRC Member comycus Posted April 27, 2010 Author SRC Member Share Posted April 27, 2010 Yup I know, but looking at the feasibility of having the extra length in an overflow box first. Will it affect performance? No point building something that doesn't work. Quote My old 3ft
jackywongto
Comy, I know nuts about this but found this site where there is a picture of an external overflow used for euro bracing: http://www.lifereef.com/siphon.html Last pic at the bottom. Try calling Ian. I am sure he knows if the 4inch distance is feasible. reef999
My tank euro bracing is 3.5". As long the length of the box is big i think should be able to handle the flowrate. Here's the picture of mine. I am using 1262 for this setup. (Helmet just shows the size for comparison)

SRC Member comycus Posted April 29, 2010 Author SRC Member Share Posted April 29, 2010 I have checked around and it seems only I-aquatics custom makes these overflow boxes. Ready made ones can be found off the shelf by them and at AM. For tanks with euro bracing like mine, the additional length does reduce flow rate. So have to factor this in when considering your return pump. Will post updates on my overflow box when I get it next week. reef999
Thanks bro, just what I need! Care to share where you got it built? I DIY it using acrylic which previously used for arowana tank cover. Using jigsaw cut to size and glue them up using acrylic glue... The length of the inflow will determine your capacity of flowrate it can take. My overflow box length is 10". Using 2 durso stand pipe and connected one to skimmer and another one to sump.
