Which skimmer to buy JBJ 28G Nano Tank

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Need your advice..I intend to change the current skimmer and wondering which would be the best option..

seen in threads about Tunze 9002 skimmer...but realised by buying these..i have to make some minor adjustments to relocate my filter compartment

Also heard about deltec MCE300 and has good reviews about it. A bro i know well is also using it..Is it an overkill?

thinking of how i can best utilise the present compartment just by replacing another better skimmer ...

Your opinions appreciated. Thanks!

Btw my thread of my tank

bro, I do not have your tank dimension but I think hanging a mce 300 or 600 might not be possible for your tank IOS.

seems like tunze 9002 might be your only option.

bro vurbul did it on his 28G nano. I've yet to drop by his place to take a look. But off my head i reckon the skimmer looks abit too bulky...

About the Tunze..agree with you..looks like it. I'm hunting to search for any of the bros using the Tunze 9002 and see how they modify/rearrange their filter compartment.

hey if MCE can be used on the 28g, then go for MCE 600.

looks bigger but more effective skimming.....

9002 is for tank smaller than yours imo

If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

Hi Bro. I believe for the 24G tank you will need to modify as the canopy covers all the way. For 28G no need to, as the canopy does not cover the filtration area.

Thanks for the thread. Had seen it. It was one of the thread that make me realise the limitation of 24G and one of the consideration factor as well that made me hunt for the 28G model.

Hi Bro. agree about the MCE600 with more effective skimming. My concern is, will it be too much of skimming? Just worried that the MCE300/MCE600 might be overkill to run for 28G

When it comes to skimming, more is better and there is no such thing as overskimming a tank. Anyway, Indian Chief aka Jacky is using the MCE600 on his 1.5ft cube tank.

My Setup:

3x2x2 tank with IOS

Equipment List:

Chiller: Artica 1/5HP

Chiller Pump: Sicce 4000

Return Pump: OR3500

Skimmer: Deltec APF600

Wavemaker: Tunze Wavebox/2x Hydor K2/SCWD wavemaker

Lights: DElighting 2x150W MH + 2x 39W T5 Atinic

FR: Skimz

FR Pump: Atman AT-104

Tubby ATO, Kalkweisser Reactor with magnetic stirrer.

Hi seanewbie, what I heard from expert is; there is no such thing as too much skimming;

more powerful skimming means that you can have more livestock and feed more.

It is better to overkill than underkill .... haha

(-_-) Happy will do ... (o_o)

i am using a tunze9002 for JBJ 24G... currently using the stevie cup for my skimmer...

IMO its a good skimmer just that the water level needs monitoring.. too low or too high and it wun skim..

A man with a reef tank is a man with an empty wallet...

Thanks for the advice. Am now reading reviews of skimmer. Understand Red Sea Prizm skimmer is also compatible for our nano tank..but read the review...for all to share

rating 1 out of 5

Red Sea Prizm Skimmer, November 5, 2008

By Trippick

"The skimmer does not pull enough waste from the water.

The pump is difficult to remove to service because you have to remove the whole skimmer from the side of the tank - the only access to the pump is from the back.

The skimmer is not versatile as it can only be used as a hang on and not as an in-sump skimmer.

The skimmer will only fit over the side of small (really small) tanks. I have had to hacksaw mine apart and then re-join it together to get it to fit over my 75 gallon QT tank.

The skimmer is noisy - it has bad air sucking sounds after a few months operation."

U may want to consider the AquaC Renoma nano skimmer. It has pretty good reviews if I remember correctly.

I am loving my MCE300. Best money ever spent so far. The amount of junk it can pull out is great. Its big but you hang it at the back. No one will notice. My wife doesn't, yet.

For using it on the 28g JBJ, u need to mod the input and output pipes. Need to cut it short a bit.

I did consider the Prizm, Remora as well as Tunze before settling for MCE300. I wanted a skimmer which has the pump on the outside of the tank and not in it. I dont want to mess with more equipments and cables going into my JBJ IOS. So that removes the Remora and Tunze on my list. So comparing between the Red Sea Prizm and the Deltec MCE300, I feel that paying $100plus more on the MCE300 is a better choice in the long run.

And I am loving it.
