Hmmmm....

The top portion seems to be posted by me..... :)

You can get the Sakis at that price from Eye Lighting....

But if you notice the thread on colour test by Spade... you can see that the reef will look pretty yellow....

Recommend that reefers who wants high PAR and also good colouration from corals supplement the Sakis with a bulb with a high portions of blue...

I'm with Blueline Bulbs (400W).... alternative choices are Radiums....

If want them plain, nice with a slight bluish sheen, go for Ushios... for that, look for Spade, he's the guy.....

For radium MH lamps try Penta Lighting at AMK indst'l pk 2. THey have 250w radium at $100 each (while stock last) but if demand is there they will reorder. They used to have 400w radium as well but they say they will not reorder it anymore.

If all the reefers here can band together they can reorder it again. THey can also order Osram blue 400 watts lamp. I have not seen what the Osram blue will look like yet but it should be similar. The last time I asked another shop they say they can sell at $110 each for quantity of 10 per order. Please note that Osram has not printed any spectral distribution chart so not sure whether the peak falls at 450 nm ( I suspect that some of the 20K bulbs in the US other than radium or Ushio comes from Osram.)

Hi Guys,

Since we are in this topic of DIY Ballast...

I have a question....

I'm currently holding onto a Blue line 400W bulb... only issue.... dunno the striking voltage require to ignite the bulb.... hunt the web and found no specs to guide me.... no rep office here for Bluelines so I'm stuck and I'm suppose to get the HPS ballast tommorow.... :(

So I'm intending to bring the bulb to Eye Lighting and try every ignitor from the lowest striking voltage to the highest.... the first ignitor capable to strike the bulb up should be the one...... IS THIS THE RIGHT WAY?????

suppose for 400W, ignitor should be 4 kV.....

I think Spade has the same issue with his 250W Ushios...

One excellent lesson learned when ordering bulbs from overseas.... GET THE SPECS!!!!!......

Weiming, should be there around 10 am...

will call you....

Boy, you gonna need lots of actinics to neutralise the yellow..........

Yes, regarding the Radiums, anyone else interested????

Can overdrive the bulb with a 430V HPS Ballast.... then wouldn't be so blue...

actually I'm planning to buy 2x250 iwasaki tmr and using 4x 36watts actinic PLs to offset the color

You are going to need a lot more actinics than that! Don't underestimate how bright Iwasaki bulbs are. Even a 400W Radium can't balance out the light from a 250W Saki properly.

Yeah..... I definitely stand by that statement.....

recommend that you also join AT, Tanzy and Myself in getting 400W Radiums ... in fact 2 sets to balance out the Iwasaki.... quick quick, place your order for the Radiums in the Radium Bulk Order Section......:lol::lol::lol:

PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) is the measurement for the PAR output of a bulb.

Iwasaki 6500K 250W

124.2 on MH Ballast

106.5 on MV Ballast

I can't find any PPFD readings on the other bulbs at that wattage.

Ushio 10000K 400W

99.11 on Magnetic ballast

105.7 on PFO-HQI ballast (430W Son Agro HPS)

107.5 on Blueline E-ballast

Osram Radium 400W

90.63 on Magnetic

110.2 on PFO-HQI

114.4 on Blueline E-ballast

The ballast recommended by Iwasaki is the ANSI H33 ballast, since this lamp is designed to replace the mercury vapor (MV) lamps in MV light fixtures. However, most aquarists run this lamp on ballasts rated for both M59/H33.

Iwasaki 6500K 400W

187.6 on Magnetic

199.7 on MV

176.3 on E-ballast
