i bought an Arctica chiller 1/4Hp for my 5 ft tank and 4 ft sump. Tank temp was 31.4 C. It took almost 8 hrs to cool it down to 27C. Is this normal ? How long does it take to cool down by 1C ? It also made a humping noise when cooling. Thanks.

8 hrs is definitely way too excessive.

1/4 HP might be underpowered.

also whats the setup like?

MH, sump, full height cabinet?

I have LEDs, sump and open top tank. I used the sizing chiller calculator on jbjlighting, 1/4 Hp was recommended. The chiller is vibrating very loudly now. The tank temp increased by 1C every half an hour. Could the chiller be damaged ? It is new.

Bro luweiba,

1) check refrigerant

Maybe take a pail of water.

pump water into the chiller and return back to the pail.

See if the water turns cold.

If it does not, contact JBJ service center.

2) calibration

Do you have a thermometer in the main tank?

just wondering if the sensor in the chiller can be damaged.

3) how many powerheads you have in the tank.n how many wattage are these?

Overall volume of the tank setup? inclu sump

Recalculate the HP required. maybe you missed out something.

I have seen 4 footer using 1/3 HP and it was barely enough but they were using 250 MHs.

If vibrating loudly probably something wrong with the compressor or with the fan in your chiller. Get the service guy to come down and check. No matter how underpowered your chiller is, your tank temp can't be increasing at 1 degC every half hour. This indicates that your chiller is not working and probably causing your tank temp to increase.
