Anthias

Hi All,

I'm currently seeking for Anthias in my reef...

Know that they are normally much more difficult to maintain than the average fishes....

Would like t o know which other specimens are more hardy and easier to aclimitise to standard foods....

Anyone kept Purple Queens successfully?

got 3 anthias in my tank ... they have taken to pellets and MS since i gotten them . They need lots of hidding places , according to some feedback i read . But the purple one is really one hard fish to keep in the tank . Not to much success with it from some guys that i have came across

You thinking of keeping them ... it is strongly recommended but not too sure about the purple one though ... and more x !!!

I have 6 in my tank and all from Neo Tiew.

Those anthias there are usually fed on pellets.

Another place to get is Cavan Rd.

I might also be keen on Queen Tigers.....

Might attempt Purple Queens once I can get my hands on some phytoplankton and rotifers....

I think purple queens are extremely difficult... even feeding lots of BBS will see them getting skinnier and skinnier.

Let me put it this way... even public aquariums worldwide do not have any luck sustaining them.

My favourite anthias are Dispars and Sunbursts (very ex).

Neo Tiew has some new batches of Anthias, i think they are dispars.

Around 20 odd pieces but still not eating yet.

Wait for a few more for me to drop by to feed them with my magic fingers.....

Phang, u need to have patience to keep anthias. Must really wait till they eat before u buy (i think LCK110, Sealife, OP do allow u to feed them to see that they eat). And chance of survival is higher if u get more. And anthias like dispar, lyretails, sunburst (sunburst is ex.. LCK110 is selling at $25!) need to start with frozen bs/ms but after a while they can be trained to eat dry food (even seaweed). I think i have give up on purple queen. I have the same exact situation as AT. Keep feeding them bbs everyday and yet "bye bye" after ~1mth. So good luck!

Actually, I just found a supplier in zooplankton harvested off S. Pacific. The plankton are brought in dead and refrigerated. To be fed within a month. I am negotiating with them to bring in a small sample first. If it works, then I think I am going to throw away my ongoing plankton cultures. And then keeping anthias will be easy as ABC. Will take a few months to work things out, will keep u guys informed though if things work out.

Interesting....

I always thought that anthias would chase those type of zooplankton that zips thru water, not the floating type coz they tends to look like debris or detritus.... alive or otherwise.

You will know what I am talking about when you go night diving and you see lots of 'insects' crowding around your dive torch!

I may be wrong... perhaps pacificbetta could be the first guinea pig to find out? I am sure if you're right, a lot of public aquariums worldwide will be asking for your advice! hee hee!

You mean the other name for Lyretail anthias aka Jewel Fairy anthias Pseudanthias squamipinnis?

or Truncated Fairy - Pseuanthias Truncatus or

Hawaiian Fairy - Pseudanhias Ventralis Hawaiiensis or

Longfin Anthias/Rainbow Fairy Basslet - Pseudanthias ventralis ???

The plankton I was talking about should mix well in water and with the aid of water movement, should "swim around" to hopefully attract the attention of the anthias.

Looks like a male Lyretail anthias - Pseudanthias squamipinnis to me.

Another anthias that is occasionally available is pseudanthias carrberryi. It is pink and yellowish orange in colour. Got 2 from Neo Tiew.

What about Sunburst? It is difficult or need special feeding? I have 2 Square (male and female), 3 Tri-colours, one lye-tail, one diapar and one purple queen(never seen this one eat but surviving).

Those of getting a sunburst. How to tell male from female?
