Senior Reefer yikai Posted February 6, 2010 Senior Reefer Share Posted February 6, 2010 its hard for any organism to consume diatom growing on the sand. because its difficult to eat... sand is a fluid medium which makes grazing very difficult. there are two choices to clear diatom build up on sand. increase flow and movement of sand to constantly shift it and make it look white again, or get a sea cucumber. what sea cucumbers do is eat up your sand together with all the algae, and digest the algae, and by passing out the undigested sand through their other end as form of waste. the sand that comes out is snow white and clean. they are super good at their job but when they die, they take all your livestock with them. a dying sea cucumber is a tank waiting to crash

RockyBoy
removed the cucumber whew.... Yes, remove and make soup. Sea cucumber is not meant to keep in a tank. Read more on why there is phosphate in the tank. After that you will be good at your tank's husbandry. SRC Supporter ReDDeviLs Posted March 2, 2010 SRC Supporter Share Posted March 2, 2010 just a reminder, please do not use "used sand" from reefers without washing them thoroughly. the amount of toxic trapped in the previous owners tank will be a huge huge problem for you in future. LIVE SAND from reefers are not like LIVESAND you get from LFS e.g natures live sand. proven product by SRC reefers Quote [ ] [ ] Reef Reefing Reefed
