LEDs for SPS dominated reef setups

Hi Reefers,

There has recently been a influx of LEDs as a alternative lighting source for reef setups.

So am curious to know whether if there are any reefers out there who have achieve success using LEDs as a predominant lighting source. esp SPS dominated setups.

Hope to gather some information as i'm keen to change my convert my current MH to LEDs. :thanks:

i think many of the reefer here has been curious on this as well what types of LED can really support a SPS dominated setup ?

It will be good for us if this can be proven as an alternative source of lighting as high electricity consumption from the MH and chiller is one of the key factor which turn many SPS keeper away

Prehapes some of reefer here can share their suceess as well with the types of LED lighting they are using for their SPS, or we can wait for the review from the commerical seller.

**PS: i just got one test pcs of Acropora from GO yesterday, and i will be testing it with 1 unit each of LumenAqua ocean and Lumenaqua and see how it react...:P

i got a 4ft lumenaqua ocean, anyway to change the leds to 3w, what must i change?

or any diy gurus can help me for a fee?

the original set comes with its own power adapter

I personally prefer T5 after testing the recent LED from M** (Just my opinion). LED surely can keep SPS (some species giving nice color, birdnest/etc) and Clams but i'm not sure if they do provide the same result in terms of wattage compare to T5. Do consider coverage area and lighting period when comparing wattage consumption. Lastly, how long can the LED last is not tested as well. Do note that it is not easy to change the LED if it finally fail. (Keep my finger cross)

agrees that the spread for LED is not there, hence it is compensated by the multiple row. LED according to specification can last long but subject to QC(same for MH, T5, etc). The driver driving the LED is one thing to take note. Support for LED is still a question as i did posted. Replacement, lead time, etc. It is not like T5 or MH where one can easily source the supply and do simple replacement. For LED, some replacement cannot be done individual but in entire board. Parts may not be readily available and seems like it is evolving and yet to stablise to achieve certain standard. Nevertheless, one cannot deny more that in times to come, LED will be the technology(judging from the tread). Therefore, the question is whether you want to get something which may get obsolete fast. Being a pioneer in product life cycle isnt cheap.

Personally, i am impressed by Aqua Lumen, the colour temperature dial is one superb feature which MH and T5 cannot achieve. I may be having wrong perception as i am not experienced or exposed enough in LED technology. For those specialised in DIYing, has been following but everytime got lost......haha.

Certainly hope more bros can share and show their results.

Solo, Wonder

on the LED replacement portion: A blown LED might not cause all the rest of the other LEDs to fail. It very much depends on how the LED circuitry is done. A well thought design would have avoided that. The new MaxSpect G2 allows you to swop out the LED (think they will be individually connected) without too much hassle and it will not void the warranty. You can simply purchase another few LEDs as standby and use them to replace faulty ones.

LEDs should still last much longer than a T5 tube or MH bulb for the same effectiveness period. Think Sherman, Rocky, Jameshong has been using them for quite some time already. This is one of the reasons for moving onto LED. The others are less heat transferred to the tank and hence less power consumption on the chiller.

AquaLumen : Yes the dial and the colour tone adjustment is unique, abeit at a much higher price.

Eqpt: Deltec MCE 600, Tunze 6055 with Tunze 7091 controller, Artica 1/15 HP chiller, AquaIllumination Sol Blue LED Light System

2011 resolution : Do it simpler, better and in an easier way!

Look at this

vertex-lumina-led-light-video/ pay attention to the last part, its a good to have lighting but not a must have...

wow i'm a fan , i want thunderstorms, the concept is damn good , like a solaris combine with a profilux but to have all the leds only in the centre is something i am not quite into, limited spread, alot of shadows over the scaping

i think the spread issue is answered by vertex. u like the idea then save up loh. maybe when the time arrives the we can get it together.

I am just an average FR (fish reefing) writer. If you like my FRs, please upz my points.

Everyone who converted know the advantage of LEDs.(Especially for tank above 2 ft)

And how different corals is faring under LEDs
