Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.

Hey guys, I had the same problem with my overflow compartment too. Water is bound to make at least some sound when it crashed down 2.5 feet into little pipes. What I did was just to put some Foam in there to stop the noise.

FOWLR Tank : Decom

Invert Tank: Decom

Current Tank: 2 ft with 2ft sump, 2 pyjama Cardinals, 1 Watchman Goby, 8 sand gobies, common saltwater shrimps, 3 turbo snails. 1 super green paly

Hey guys, I had the same problem with my overflow compartment too. Water is bound to make at least some sound when it crashed down 2.5 feet into little pipes. What I did was just to put some Foam in there to stop the noise.

I had the same guggling sounds as mentioned by some of you guys.

I turned the valve to allow lesser water from gushing down.

This solves the problem temporary as the water level in the overflow rises up, I realised the guggling sound was due to air entering the durso piping and that is due to the fact that the water level in the overflow is very close to the inlet of the pipe.

However the problem came back, I realised as I close the valve to allow lesser water from gushing down, the water level in the overflow does rise up for a while, then it will drop down to the level of the pipe, this again causes the guggling sound. Then after a while the water will rise again. This process keeps repeating itself.

Any masters here is able to help me identify the problem and rectify it?

many thanks and a happy new year

The hole is to allows air in to stabilize the siphon. Any noise the standpipe makes is drowned out because the standpipe inlet is kept below the water line. From your above post, your comes with a valve, this is even better.

You need to fine tune the valve in order to stabilize the siphon thereby eliminating the gurgling noise.

If there is still noise after much fine tuning, the problem lies with your overflow pipe ending in your sump creating too much back pressure causing this back pressure to build-up and creating a burping effect.

"Back pressure in the standpipe prevents air in the pipe from exiting the drain line. Instead of exiting the drain line, the air bubbles try to rise in the pipe slowing the rate at which the pipes drain. The water level in the chamber then rises. The increase in the chamber water level adds pressure to help clear the air from the pipe. Once enough water pressure exists in the chamber to overcome the back pressure, the air is literally is "burped" out of the drain line which crates a sudden rush of water. This is displayed as a rapid drop in the overflow chamber water level."

What you need to do is:

  1. If using hard piping - Ensure there outlet of piping existing into sump is not too deep into the water or being blocked by filter wool and/or hard pipes does not travel horizonatally or up-slope.
  2. If using soft Piping - No loop or kink
