Taking shots of tank under LED

Hi all,

Was wonder how people who are using LEDs for their tanks take photo of it...Have tried with my point and shoot cam and cant seem to get anything good out of it...Any suggestions?

Hope your P&S can adjust white balance.

find something white. drop it into your tank.

use it to adjust your WB.

I don't think so leh...haha!think can only adjust aperture and shutterspeed...think must read the manual again!I tried with really slow shutterspeed but the color still to glaring... Sorry ah not really a camera person!AHHA!what kind of white balance should i achieve?Or how do i know if i have the right white balance?

WB is achieve when the photo you take has the same colouration as the objects in your tank as you see with your naked eye.

When in doubt, for p&s digicams, just use full auto mode. Then u can edit the photo using a photo editing software.

Sorry hor. should be take photo of a white object.

then use that photo to set it as your WB.

P&S cameras WB adjustment should be limited right? If it doesn't work for you, I think you should just switch off your Blue LEDs and take.

Yea...but seems like mine has custom capability...will fiddle around a little to see what i can come up with

HAhaH!still cant get the shot right...it is still over exposed...dang...and i am mounting the LEDs in a VERY dangerous way so very nervous when taking pictures...will try to take a good one when i get the stand for the LEDs done!

Thx for the advice on the WB...haha!wouldnt have known my cam had this function!LOL

Try taking in raw format then u can adjust the WB in photoshop.

Anyway..i tried taking a few photos but seems over exposed/too bright and the color is not what i am seeing...how do i reduce tt?shutter speed?

reduce aperture size, increase shutter speed.

Means the F number gets bigger, like F11 will be good to start off with,

and the fraction number gets smaller, like 1/200 would be good.

Colour have to adjust your WB. If you cannot manual adjust, then choose the closest representation. You will have to post process in photoshop or some photo editing software to help u.

yup use F9. hmm you prob have to consult your user manual on what it means by 'over'. Technically if you can manual set WB you will focus on a white object for your camera to recognize and tweak colours. Either you are doing it wrongly, or it's too blue for your camera to differentiate colour.

Just a wild guess... maybe 'OVER' means totally cannot recognize colours and everything turns out just in different shades of blue

I think the "over" means overexposed. U need a smaller aperture (u can't; F9 is the smallest you can go for your camera). Anyway, White Balancing is a way of telling the camera what is actually white under the different lighting conditions. i.e if you look at a piece of white paper at different temperatures of light(indoor and outdoor for example), the "white" you see will be different.

Try this instead : Mount your camera on a tripod and play with the shutterspeed. In your case, I think you will need a faster shutter.

Also, try not to point the camera directly at a LED. If the LED is very bright and too near to the camera sensor, you risk damaging the camera's sensors.

Actually you should use Manual or "M" if possible. If "P" shows over expose, most likely both "S" and "A" will be over expose regardless what shuttle speed and aperture you use as they all use the same AI. Play with the combination and also tone down you ISO. Use spot metering if possible, meter on some mid tone corals, holding on the the metering button, focus on the whole tank to take a shot. Likely your whiter parts will still be over expose a little, but at least your darker parts of the tank will show.
