SRC Member demonsori Posted November 21, 2009 SRC Member Share Posted November 21, 2009 Hi everyone, My place is having a regular switch box maintance and there will be no power supply for about 5 hours. Can the fishes and corals be able survive without pump? Thanks. would recommend running few battery operated pumps/ airstones for oxygenating the water( agitate water surface to facilitate gas exchange) ---beneficial for ur lifestock if heavy stocking...it is also very impt for the beneficial bacteria on ur sand/ rocks and filter media... place the airstones where the rising bubbles will not contact corals.... massive die-offs due to lack of oxygen for ur beneficial bacteria might harm ur lifestock indirectly because its die-off n thus reduce population and capability for the nitrogen cycle... even though most of the time it takes less than half the stated 5 hrs to complete the maintenance, better play safe...the increased tank temp due to chiller / fan having no pwer to run on will cause oxygen levels to drop fast too... dnsfpl
shouldn't be a problem, encounter a few times(up to 8 hours) due to lift upgrading my bioload was low at that time, iirc less than 10 fish i am more concern about the overflowing of your sump tank cheers
SRC Member LaW Posted November 21, 2009 SRC Member Share Posted November 21, 2009 add battery operated air pump. it will be of no problem for that time line. all the best. Genesis 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. FuEl
I will be having the same powercut issue next month. Buy those air pumps with back-up battery supply. The one by Ocean Free, Ranger 9000 is quite strong and the battery can last 10-20 hours (depending on continuous/interval setting). I have stocked up on 3, still looking for 3 more. Aiyah, I encountered the same situation last month. Notice stated from 9.00am - 12.00pm. I bought 3 battery operated pumps. When the day finally come, only shut-down for 20 minutes for maintanance. Sigh All my worries was unnecessary.
