Tank Splitting

Recommended Posts

My sister's tank (freshwater, 6 years, 2 foot) just split. water everywhere (her fish are safe in my other freshwater tank).

I know that tanks will fail after a given ammount to time, but anyone with a 'rule of thumb' as to when to replace your tank? (I know that it usually starts out as a leak, but some tanks just 'split') I can just imagine the day my marine tank would do the same. SALTwater everywhere.....

Also, how long do those wrought iron stands last (2 foot as well)? mine has been in action for 6 years. Any indication of when to replace it? It has a sprinkling of rust on it.

bro for tank to spilt it due to the silicon there's air gab which after long duration that cause it the other factor are the spec of the tank for holding as big amount of water in the 6 ft tank u also need to consider on the thickness and euro brac which have a better holding.

Let me ask u how it split at the joint part of the silicon or glass break apart??

It really depends. Some people I know have kept their freshwater tanks for more than 15 years...

If an iron wrought stand is rusty it doesn't mean that it will give way straight away. Unless you see that the stand is rusted through or is going to rust through soon, then you should get worried and change to a new stand. typically a wrought iron stand should last more than 10 years.

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.

Was there any form of cushion (ie. Styrofoam) at the base of the tank to compensate for levelness? My dad used to keep a 2nd hand 4 Ft freshwater tank without the styrofoam, and the tank cracked & crashed within weeks due to uneven pressure. Gave my grandma quite a shock! :heh:

no stryrofoam. The glass did not crack. The sillicone gave way and water spurted out from one side of my tank. The tank still looks intact. You will only be able to tell that it is spoilt if you fill it 2/3 full with water.

What was the condition of your silicone? If it was peeling off, in bad condition, prob due to old age and lousy silicone used. If it still looked new, maybe when cleaning your tank with razor blade or something sharp, accidentally cut into it?

It was my sister's tank. black widow tetras, rummy nose tetras, 2 sucker fish; gravel and a bit of java moss from my tank. She did not really care much about her tank anyway. She did not use razors to clean the tank - she let the sucker fish do the work. Anyway, that portion of sillicone that split was not touched as the built-in filter was covering it. My sister's tank was always 3/4 full as she did not bother to top up the water regularly when it evaporated. I think the cycle of wetting and drying the sillicone had an effect on it.

Just wondering, cos i use razors to clean my marine tank (2 foot as well) and i am actually quite careless when cleaning, so my razor would sometimes 'bump' the sillicone at the side of the tank and when that happens, i always feel that i might have cut/scraped off the tiniest bit of sillicone. My tank was bought only a few months ago from freshnmarine.com and has bracing on the sides.

I always try to be as careful as i can when i clean my tank, but with so little space to manuever, i easily make mistakes. Will the small cuts eventually build up and cause the tank to split early? In that case, when do you think i should replace my tank? I am going to NS soon and the worse thing i can get is a call from my mother saying that my tank split. It would also seem foolish to spend $40++ to replace a tank that i had just bought for the same price.

Must be careful bro, your silicone is the only thing holding the glass panes, up to you whether you want to change la, but in future, maybe just stick to atm card to clean your walls, safer.
